  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    Considered the start of the Cold War. US supported countires militarly and economically to falling into Soviet ideology.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    The US provided aid to countries recovering from WWII disasters. Goals were to rebuild a war damaged areas, remove trade barriers, modernize industry, and make Europe economically stable.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    Soviet Union blocked all routes of transportation from East to West Berlin. US, Britian, and France occupied West Berlin, which didn't have supplies for the people so they flew in tons of foods, and needed items to support the people for nearly a year.
  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO
    A miltary alliance with the US, Canada, and several other European countries. This did not include the Soviet Union. If war were to break out during cold war, a attack on one of the NATO nations would be considered an attack on all.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    North Korea invaded South Korea to put them under communist unfluence. The United Nations sent in troops to push back North Korea. By the end of war, the border line was still considered the 38th parallel, leaving the North with little gains.
  • Rosenberg Spy Case

    Rosenberg Spy Case
    Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted and executed in 1953, for conspiracy to commit espionage during the Cold War. They were passing information about the Atomic Bomb to the Soviets.
  • Creation of Warsaw Pact

    Creation of Warsaw Pact
    A mutual alliance between eight communist countires in East Europe and the Soviet Union. Most of these nations were satelite nations of the Soviet Union. Similar to NATO.
  • Vietnam War

    North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam, seeking communist control of the southern portion of Vietnam. Soviets backed North and US backed South, to help keep their containment policy. The US first intervened in 1965 and pulled out in 1973. North Vietnam won over south in 1975.
  • The Bay of Pigs

    The Bay of Pigs
    An unsuccessful military invasion of Cuba by a group of Cuban refuges in April 1961. An anti-communist attack trained and funded by the United States CIA. It wasintended to overthrow the communist government, but was defeated by Prime Minister Fidel Castro.

    Berlin Wall Goes Up
    Talks of a border to go up between the two parts of Berlin had been in the air. Then one night construction workers dug out roads from one side to the other so no transportation can be done between East and West. The wall was created to prevent escapees from going to a communist country to a free state in the matter of a footstep. .
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    Cuban Missle Crisis
    Considered the closest call of nuclear war. Russian leader sent in these missles to deture any potential overthrow attempts of the Cuban communist government by the US. The dispute lasted 13 days. The effects of the communism are felt today with the trade embargo on Cuba.
  • The Six Day War

    The Six Day War
    War between Israelis and Arabs which lasted six days. Israelis won the war, with intial gains of the Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula from Egypt. The West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, The Golan Heights from Syria.
  • SALT

    SALT
    International treaties involving the United States and the Soviet Union on the issue of arms control. There were two rounds of talks and agreements, SALT I and SALT II. US eventually repented SALT II because of Soviet invasion of Afgahnistan. Then in 1991 they agreed on START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty).

    Fall of Berlin Wall
    Other communist nations were losing leadership and communism was fading out. Then on November 9, 1989, East German government official Günter Schabowski stated, "Permanent relocations can be done through all border checkpoints between the GDR (East Germany) into the FRG (West Germany) or West Berlin." People could freely cross between East and West Berlin now.

    Collapse of Soviet Union
    The Soviet Union fell apart from very bad economic conditions to poor political leadership. Mikhail Gorbachev was the last leader of the country, He introduced glasnot, or freedom of speech, which also lead to the fall, because people were expressing themselves. It fell into 15 different countries and was considered by many as a victory of freedom, democracy, and capitalism.
