    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was to help the contries with the economy. The person that started or came up with the plan was US Secretary of State George C. Marshall. The US was afriad that the communist groups would gain more power and they were scared that they would because they were so powerful at the time. The Marshall plan started in April 2, 1948 and between now and 1952 over $13 billion was aid and given to the countries that signed it.

    Creation of NATO
    Most of the the countries governments had fallen to the Nazis. Each promised that they would allow free elections, but in the end they didn't . This left Western Europe and Eastern Europe divided by style of government. The USSR demanded oil from Iran in exchange for withdrawling.

    Soviets create & test nuclear bomb
    The test site was at Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan and the USSR uses their first atomic bomb and the code name is First Lighting. The Soviet scientists constructed buildings, bridges, and other civilian things to test the blast or meassure it. The scientists also put out animals in cages. The explosion destroyed the structers that were built and as well with the animals they had built.

    The failure to hold free elections throughout the Korean Peninsula in 1948 deepened the division between the two sides North and South. North established a communist government and the South established a nominally democratic government. The war started with the North invading the South on June 25, 1950.

    US creates and tests the hydrogen bomb
    The U.S. uses the first thermonuclear weapon which is the hydrogen bomb, on Eniwetok atoll in the Pacific. This bomb made the U.S. a short lived adventure in the nuculear race with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union had used a atomic device in September 1949 and that made the U.S. speed the process up to make the next stage atomic weaponry. This weapon was 1,000 times more powerful than any other nuclear device.

    Creation of the Warsaw Pact
    The USSR made the Warsaw Pact in response to the integration of the Federal Republic of Germany into NATO in October 1954. The 8 members countries of the Warsaw Pact pledged the mutual defense of any member who would be attacked. For 36 years the NATO and the Warsaw treaty never directly waged war aganist each other in Europe or the US or the Soviet Union.

    It was an unsuccessful military invasion of Cuba undertaken by the paramilitary group in April 1961. It was for to overthrow the revolutionary leftist government of President Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado. Launched from Guatemala, the invading force was defeated by the Cuban armed forces, under the command of Prime Minister Fidel Castro, within three days. Almost 50 years later, relations between Castro's Cuba and the United States remain strained and tenuous.

    The Wall goes up to pervent the citixens from leaving the East to got to the West. The Berlin Wall was up for 28 years. The wall was divided into 4 zones and it would be for the US, France, Great Britian, and the Soviet Union. Around midnight on Augest 12-13, 1961 trucks with soliders and construction workers rumbled through East Berlin.

    This was a 13 day confrontation between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the United States on the other side. It was one of the major events in the cold war. The US was scared that the Soviets were going to spread communism. Kennedy was embarrassed that the Bay of Pigs ended with are trained combatants killed. Castro was also worried that the US would try to overthrow him again.

    The USS Madox was on a huge mission on the along the North Vietnam's coast. The USS Madox was attacked that as been stalking the Gulf of Tonkin. There was a secound attack that was reported 2 days later on the USS Turner Joy. The USS Madox and the USS Turner Joy was attacked in the same area. Congressed approved the Gulf of Tokin Reslution on Augest 7 1964 and was signed by Johnson. It gave Johnson to control the military in South Aisa with out declaring war.

    US sends a man to the moon
    The U.S. sends the very first man to the moon. The people that went was Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. 6 1/2 hours later Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. Armstrong said when he took his first step "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." The mission was called Apollo 11. The very last time we walked on the moon was mission Apollo 17 in 1972.

    President Nixon said that week he was in China, it will change the world. The Prime Minister Zhou Enlai urged early in peace in Vietnam. North Vietnamese took Nixon vist as a threat and thought that China and the U.S. would make a deal behind their backs.

    As midnight apporhed the Soviets planned a massive airlift to Kabul. An estimated 280 transport aircraft in 3 divisons of about 8,500 men each. The mujahidin employed guerrilla tactics to use against the Soviets. They would attack or raid quickly against the Soviets. After they would dissapear into the mountians. They would use any kind of weapons they found from the Soviets or the weapons we gave to them the U.S.

    Mikhall Gorbachev becomes the leader of the Soviet Union. He introduces free market to reforms and a limited expansion of politcal freedoms. In 1989 the East German people that are non- violent people unexpectedly brought down the Berlin Wall.
  • Collapse of the Soviet Union

    Collapse of the Soviet Union
    Gorbachev resigned as the General Secretary of the CPSU and he also had the government be dissolved. The Soviet Union collapsed with dramtic speed and in the winter of 91. Yeltsin pretty much took over for Gorbachev and took over what ever was left of that government. When Gorbachev gives up power; leaving th US the only Sole Superpower left.
