  • The American Civil War Starts

    The American Civil War Starts
    The American Civil War started over the disagreement on having slaves or not owning slaves. Seven southern slave states declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. They soon enough became eleven states.The states that did not delcare secession were northern states called The Union. The first shots were fired on April 12 1861 and they were shot at Fort Sumter. The Fort is located in South Carolina's Charleston Bay.

    Emancipation Proclamation
    The Emancipation Proclemation was Issued on January 1st 1863. The president at the time was Abraham Lincoln. In the Emancipation Proclemation It declared that " All persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free". The Emancipation Proclemation was issued as the Unitd States was heading into their third year of fighting in the civil war.

    The End of The Civil War Four long, hard years after the first shots at Fort Sumter were made, the Confederacy was finally defeated and 620,000 were declared dead. The Civil War ended with a win for the Northern, non-slave states.

    The 14th amendment was adopted on july 9th 1868. It is one of the reconstruction amendments. The amendment talks about citizenship rights and equal protection over anyone and everyone. The amendment was opposed, by mostly the southern states, but they were forced to ratify it in order to get representation in Congress
  • The 15th Amendment

    The 15th Amendment prohibits the governments (state and federal) from denying a citizen the vote to vote because of a person's color, gender, race, or "previous condition of servitude". It was ratified on February 3rd 1870 and the 15th Amendment is the third to last of the reconstruction amendments. It was very difficult to ratify this amendment and was finally adopted on March 30th 1870.

    Ida B. Wells Sues a Train
    On May 4th 1884 Ida B. Wells was aboard a train and was ordered by the conductor to leave the first class ladies car and to move to the overcrowded smoking car. She refused to and bit him. Afterwards Ida B. Wells sued the Chesapeake, Ohio and South Western Railroad Company for it's use of segregated train cars. She wins the case.
  • Ida B. Wells Publishes her Pamphlet

    Ida B. Wells Publishes her Pamphlet
    Ida B. Wells first published her pamphlet titled Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All its Phases in the year 1892. The pamphet contains documented research on lynchings across America. In the pamphlet she discusses how accuations of rape were just covers for the fact that the real reason that they were doing these horrible things to colored people was that they didn't want black economic process which threatened their dea of the inferiority of blacks.

    Homer Plessy had purchased a first class ticket at the Press Street Depot and had boarded the train, sitting down in the "whites only" car on a train on June 7th 1896. Even thogh he could pass as white he was considered black despite his light skin. When a detective told him to move to the "black's only" car he refused. Immediately he was arrested and taken off of the train.

    The Great Migration begins in the year of 1916. In the Great Migration over 6 million Africzn- americans migrate from the south to the north, northwest, and west. It was one of the most rapid and largest, mass internal movements in history. After 54 years the Great Migration finally ended.

    In the summer and fall of 1919 , In over three dozen cities, tons of riots broke out over racial inequality. The whites would attack in many cases and then in some cases the blacks fought back against them. In Chicago, Washington DC and Elaine, Arkansas most fatalities occured and the most chaos broke out.

    Little League is Formed
    Little league, the first non-segregated youth sport is formed in Williamsport, PA and is enjoyed by many. On June 6th the first little league game is played. The organization supports softball and youth baseball throughout the United States and the rest of the world.

    The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination because of race, color, religeon, gender, or a persons national origin. It outlawed racial segregation in schools and in public accomodations.

    After 86 years of cruel lynching of innocent (and guilty ) people lynching is finally stopped. Ever since 1882 lynchings became more and more popular, where guilty and innocent people everywhere were getting publicly lynched. It soon started dying down and in its last few years there was only 0-2 lynchings per year.

    After almost 60 years the Great Migration ends. More than 6 million African-Americans from the south moved to the North, West, and the Northwest.
