  • Plessy v. Fergusson

    Homer Plessy was seven-eights white but that day he wanted to be black. He sat down in a all white seat in a train, he was asked to move and he didnt so he got arrested.He went to the supreme court and the supreme court said it was okay to discriminate but it had to be equal.
    This case was important because it gave white people the power to segregate and it just made things worse.

  • Brown Vs. Board of Education

    A black girl wanted to attend the white school that was across the street from her house because the all black school was too far. The scshool didnt let her so her family sued. This is important becaue it ended segregationin public schools.
  • Murderof Emmet Till

    Emmett Till was a foourteen yer-old black kid was supposedly flirting withy a white girl so a few days later he was abducted and he was beat and shot to death. Emmett Till's trial was important because it brought attention to the discrimination and abuse that the white people were doing, it was also one of the first steps to getting more rights.
  • Rosa Parks and the montgomerry bus boycotts

    In december 1955 Rosa Parks was riding a bus and was asked to move to the colored section of the bus but she said no and didnt move. Later the bus driver called the police and had her arrested and she was fined 10$. On december 5th rosa parks and othjer activists askedall the black people not to ride the bus at all and meet at mass for a meeting.This was important because it made the white people lose money so they changed the way the seats were set up in the bus.
  • Founding of SCLC and Martin Luther King

    The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was created on January 10, 1957, when sixty black ministers and civil rights leaders met in Atlanta, Georgia because they wanted to use the same idea and tactic of the bus boycotts because they ewere succesfull.Martin Luther King was the first president of the SCLC and his objective was to abolish legalized segregation. The creation of this group was important because they were fighting for the rights of black people.
  • Little Rock Nine & Central High School

    Nine black studdents enrolled at Central High School wich was an all white school. This was the first time somebody tested the land mark case that segregation in public schools unconstitutional. On the first day the major brought the national gaurd to block the entrasnce of the nine black students, but then President Eisenhower brought the army to move the national guard and let the nine students in. This wwas important because it was the first time someone tested the resulkts of the case.
  • Greensboro Sit-In

    Several college students went in to the restaurant at around 4 and asked to be served but they were sitting in the all white section. The waitress asked them to move to the colored section but they refused, they were getting beat up and abused because they didnt move, and then they were arrested. This was important because it brought attention to hte discriminastion and made he white people look like the bad guys.
  • Freedom Ride/Freedom Riders

    This was a series of bus trips that several civil rights activists rode to the south and protested segregation in all the buses in the south. The civil rights activists were trying to use the white-only restrooms, and lunch counters, and they were getting encountered and getting treated bad.
  • March on Washington

    More than 250,000 people marched and stood in washington supporting Martin Luther King for jobs and freedom. This was the event with most support and this was when MLK gave his I have a dream speech. This march and the i have a dream speech were very important because it got national attention and the speech inspired many americans.
