  • Licence Checks

    Governor Hothamn set up licence checks twice a week.
  • Death of Drunken Scottish Digger

    A group of men beat (to death) the drunken digger. James Bently was one of the men and because he was a friend of the local magistrate he escaped prosecution alongside 3 other men from the group.
  • Diggers Meeting

    A diggers meeting was held to bring the men justice.
  • Burning of Bently's Hotel

    Directly after the meeting a group of diggers burnt down Bently's hotel. 3 of the men were arrested
  • 10,000 Diggers Meet

    10,000 diggers met to demand the release of the 3 diggers, the abolition of the licence and the vote for all males
  • Burning of Licences

    A larger meeting was held where the diggers decided to publicly burn their mining licences. The next day, as a response to the meeting, the Gold Commissioner ordered a licence hunt.
  • Meeting at Bakery Hill

    Another mass burning of licences took place at Bakery Hill. They then went to the Eureka diggings where they constructed the stokade.
  • Attack on the Stockade

    Authorities launched an attack on the stokade in the morning. The diggers were outnumbered and the battle was over in 20 minutes. 22 diggers and 5 troops were killed.
  • Material Law

    Material Law was Declared.
  • Commision into the Goldfields

    Commision into the goldfields was appointed.
  • Gold Field Commission

    The Gold Field Commission handed down its report and the government adopted all of its recommendations.
  • First Member of the Legislative Council

    Peter Lalor became the first member of the Legislative Council for the seat of Ballarat and 8 Ballarat miners were given seats on the Legislative Council.
