Roy Bryant and his brother in-law J.W. Milliam kiddnap Emmett from his uncles house in the middle of the night. Then take him to a barn and beat him up then shot him in the head. Then dumped his body in the Tallahatchie River.

Emmett's body was found by some man who was fishing in the Tallahatchie River. At first the man thought his body was just a log floating down the river but then noticed that it was a body.
