  • The Election of Abraham Lincoln

    The Election of Abraham Lincoln
    The election of Abraham Lincoln caused South Carolina to be the 1st state to secede from the Union. Abraham Faced Douglas, who represented the Northern faction of a heavily divided Democratic Party. The South had seceded because they wanted to keep slavery and they knew that Abraham Lincoln would try to end slavery. This was the United States 19th presidential election.
  • The Secession of the Southern States

    The Secession of the Southern States
    South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. Six more states seceded four months later. Those states were Texas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, and lastly Louisiana. Then later, Tennessee, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Virginia joined the south. This was all caused by the fight over Slavery.
  • The Civil War

    The Civil War
    The Civil War was fought between the Northern states(Union) and the Southern states(Confederacy) of America. The Civil War began when confederate troops attacked Fort Sumpter, SC. The Civil War was mainly over slavery. The South wanted to keep and improve slavery throughout their states while the North wanted to end slavery, especially Abraham Lincoln. Due to the North winning the war, it left many homes and buildings destroyed on southern property. The south had land, but no money.
  • Emacipation Proclamation

    On the first of January in 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued the Emacipation Proclamation. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states" are, and henceforward shall be free.
  • Freedmen's Bureau

    The Freedmen's Bureau was established in 1865 by congress to poor whites and former black slaves in the south after the Civil War. The Freedmen's Bureau provided medicine, housing, clothing, and food to slaves.
  • The 13th amendment

    The 13th amendment declared that ''Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been convicted, shall exist within the states, or anyplace subject to their jurisdiction.''
  • The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    On April 14th, 1865 a southerner named John Wilkes Booth had managed to assassinate Abraham Lincoln by shooting him in the head at a play at Ford's Theatre, in Washington. Abraham died in a bed, later that day.
  • Radical Reconstruction

    Radical Reconstruction began in the year of 1867 which included the fact that newly enfranchised blacks gained a voice in government for the first time. This basically means that blacks can now get a chance to vote.
  • The 14th amendment

    The 14th amendment that was established on July 9th, 1868 granted citizenship to ''all persons born or naturalized in the United States, which included Former slaves recently freed.''
  • Sharecropping

    After the Civil War, former slaves got jobs, and planters got laborers. Sharecropping is when a landlord or planter allows a tenant to use the land in exchange for a share of the crop. This influenced tenants to work to produce the biggest harvest ever.
  • The 15th amendment

    On February 3rd, 1870 the 15th amendment was established which granted African American men the right to vote by declaring that the ''right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by ant state on account of color, race, or previous condition of servitude.''
  • The 1st African American elected to Congress during Reconstruction

    On February 25, 1870, Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first African American member of Congress. Blanche Bruce on the other hand, was the second.
  • The Civil Rights Act of 1875

    Congress passed The Civil Rights Act of 1875 in 1875. The act protected all Americans, regardless of race, in their access to public accommodations, and protected the right to serve in juries.
  • The Reconstruction Era

    The Era after the Civil War was called The Reconstruction Era. The Reconstruction Era started in 1877. Abraham Lincoln started to plan on reconstruction before his assassination. It was hard for the south because they had lots of buildings destroyed unlike the North, wich only had some equipment destroyed. The South had no money but lots of land. In order for reconstruction to work, the north would have to give the south loans.
