A bill known as the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) was passed. The FSMA permits the FDA to concentrate on proactive approaches to food safety rather than being reactive when an outbreak arises. The FDA will be given the legal right to impose thorough, scientifically based preventative controls on the whole food chain, including obligatory preventive controls for food facilities, obligatory produce safety requirements, and the power to stop intentional contamination.
