David Ben Gurion was born in Plonsk, Poland. His real name was David Joseph Green. In 1906 he immigrated to Israel as part of a second wave of immigration. In his first years in the country he was a farmer.

In 1917 he married to Pola as he was staying in New York. His wife was a nurse. They had three children: two girls and one boy.

Declaration of Independence He was the first prime minister of Israel. On 14 may 1948, he formally proclaimed the establishment of the states of Israel, and was the first to sign the Israeli declaration of independence, which he had helped to write and united the various Jewish militias into the Israel Defense Forces. Subsequently, he became known as "Israel's founding father".

In 1953 Ben Gurion retired to Sde Boker. Sde Boker is a kibbutz in the Negev. In 1970 he retired from political life and returned to sde Boker. He died in 1973.

Two years after retiring (1953-1955) he came back to political life. He led the country during the 1956 Sinai campain.
