Dave at Night is about an orphan boy that lives at a orphanage with lots of bullies and a very abusive superintendant who's nickname is Mr. Doom. Dave must learn to survive along with the rest of the orphans -
Sitting Shiva
After Gideon was adopted by Uncle Jack, Dave and Ida were demonstrating a Jewish tradition called sitting shiva. Sitting shiva was when Jewish people would stay at home for a week after a loved one had died. -
The HHB (Hell Hole for Brats) (Hebrew Home for Boys)
Ida takes Dave to the HHB, which is a Jewish orphanage. Dave meets Mr. Bloom (Mr. Doom) and is introduced to the buddies, which are the other boys in his age group. -
The Failed Escape
Dave was walking to his room when he decided to try to escape as fast as possible. Mr. Meltzer caught him and took his Dad's old suitcase with the carving. When Dave got back to the room, he discovered that his belongings were taken and replaced with old clothes and slippers that were top big for him. -
Bullies
Mike tells Dave that every single eleven has a bully and his bully happened to be Moe, the meanest and scariest at the HHB. Moe would eat lots of Dave's food and make fun of him. -
Dave Meets Solly and Irma Lee
Dave was sneaking around when he discovered that he could easily escape from the gates of the HHB. When he was out, he saw a dollar fall down from a crowded second story window. He was about to leave when a bird started to attack him, the bird belonged to Solly, a gonif. Solly told Dave to help him tell peoples fortunes. Dave also met Irma Lee> -
Dave gets Caught
When Dave was coming back from the party he was right outside the window when Mr. Meltzer saw him and chased him down. -
Mr. Doom
Dave was taken directly to Mr Doom when he was caught sneaking around. When Mr. Meltzer opened the door Dave saw his father's carving sitting behind locked glass. Mr. Doom gave Dave a speech about what he did and then he started to beat on Dave. Dave hit his glasses, but not before Mr. Doom hit Dave in the face a couple of times. From then on all of the adults had their eyes out for Dave Caros. -
Mr. Hillinger's Art Class
Dave finds out that he loves drawing becuase of Mr. Hillinger. Mr. Hillinger invites Dave to a special drawing club where they would learn more advanced drawing skills. -
Dave goes to Irma Lee's Rent Party
Solly came to the HHB and bribed Mr. Meltzer into thinking that Dave was just coming out for a wedding party. They went to Irma Lee's party and met many famous authors, painters, and musicians. Irma Lee and Dave plan for Dave to sneak out of the HHB and to live in the Packer's basement for a while -
Daves Great Escape
One day after learning from the elevens that Mr. Doom left his office unlocked right after lunch Dave snuck in and stole the carving back. Dave sprinted down the halls and out the front door with Mr. Doom and other prefects right on his trail. -
Mr. Doom's Last Days
After sleeping at Solly's place for one night, Solly, Bandit, Mrs. Packer, Irma Lee and Dave all march right into Mr. Doom's office and tell him that if he does not make some extreme changes in the way he leads than Mrs. Packer would have to make his life miserable by tellling the world what Mr. Doom does to the boys at the ophanage. Mr. Doom stopped hurting the elevens but started abusing the other boys so much that the nice nurse eventually got Mr. Doom fired.
