Germany Invades USSR Opening Eastern Front
Germany attacked Russia. Hitler sent three armies into Russia to the north, east, and south. Hitler would not let his men surrender, and most of them died during the brutal winter and from starvation and disease. -
Battle of Stalingrad
Sunday, 23 August 1942 the first bombs fell on Stalingrad. The Germans had concentrated the bulk of the Luftwaffe in the east for the assault and they began a systematic block by block destruction of the city that lasted for five days. -
The Invasion
In the predawn hours, three airborne divisions were dropped into areas east and west of the invasion zone. To the east, the British 3rd Division secured several bridges and canals; to the west, however, the American 82nd and 101st Airborne were scattered by high winds and poor visibility. -
