General Fulgencio Batista was a military dictator and took over the Cuban government in a coup just before scheduled elections. Fidel Castro was one of the candidates and reacted to Batista's coup by becoming a communist and attempting his own revolution. Hisfirst revolution failed and was put to jail.

In 1956, Castro was sent to Mexico. There, he attempted a revolutionary effort withabout 80 followers. They returned to Cuba, in December 1956, in an invasion that they hoped would lead to a swift victory. The invasion failed but the survivors hid in the mountains of Cuba and launched a publicity campaign and guerrilla warfare. The publicity promised to end Batista regime with a just government. On January 1, Batista fled Cuba and Castro took over.

A CIA-backed force of 1,400 Cuban refugees landed at the swampy Bay of Pigs on Cuba’s southern coast. But a Cuban force of 20,000 easily overwhelmed the invaders, capturing about 1,100 men and imprisoning them. Eventually, the U.S. government secured the release of these prisoners by paying $53 million in medicine and food.

After the failure of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the US launched top-secret U-2 spy planes to photgraph the island. What they found was that the Soviet Union were building airsrtips, missile bases, and so on. And that the US thought that the Coviet Union were using Cuba to possibly launch attacks at the US from cuba.

The Soviet Union agreed to take the nuclear weapons out of Cuba and the US agreed to take off nuclear weapons off of Turkey. The Cuban Misssile Crisis marked a begininning of friendship between the Soviet Union and the US.
