  • West German Chancellor Willy Brandt wins Nobel Peace Prize

    In March 1971 WIlly Brandt worked out the details of a treaty with East Germany that led to greater cultural, personal, and economic contacts between West and East Germany.
  • Mikhail Gobachev assumes leadership of Soviet Union

    Mikhail Gobachev's leadership of the Soviet Union brought about the end of the Cold War.
  • Intermediate-range Nuclear Force Treaty

    Eliminates the use of intermdediate range nuclear weapons.
  • Communist Party conference initiates political reforms

    The conference accomplished several tasks
    1. The establishment of a new Soviet parliament (the Congress of People's Deputies)
    2. Decreed that non-communist political parties could organize
    3. Got rid of a constitutional provision taht guaranteed the Communist Party a leading role in government
    4. Created a new state presidency
