    The Viriginia Company travelers settled on the James River in Virginia. "James Fort" was settled in 1607 but the town was built in 1619.

    The Virginia House of Burgess was the first piece of legislation in the New World. It was a symbol for representative government.
  • Plymouth Rock

    Plymouth Rock
    The Mayflower and its occupants settled in Plymouth Rock in 1620. The occupants of the Mayflower are called Pilgrims. Plymouth Rock can be found in Massachusets.
  • Mayflower Compact

    The Mayflower Compact was the first written piece of governement in the United States.

    King James II was overthrown by English Parlimentarians causing the Glorius Revolution or the Revolution of 1688.

    The Salem Witch Trials occured in Massachusets between 1692-1693. The Colonists were strong Christians and believed the devil could give people the ability to harm others. They called these people 'Witches'.

    John Peter Zenger was one of the first people to help establish freedom of the press. He was put on trial for his brave articles in the paper.

    The English and the French fought over colonial domination in North America, the Carribean, and India. This war was seven years long. It also ended Salutary Neglect.

    The British issued a proclamation that kept anyone from settling west of the Applachian Mountains. This was to repay the Native Americans for helping them in the war.
  • Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act required all American Colonists to pay taxes for each piece of printed paper that they used. The money collected from this Act was used to defend and protect the American frontier near the Appalachian Mountains.

    Quartering Act
    The Quartering Act required American Colonists to house British Soliders. If there wasnt enough room in a persons house, the home owner was supposed to give them other accomodations.
  • Declaratory Act

    The Declaratory Act accompained the Stamp Act. This Act stated that the tax authorites were the same in the American Colonies as it was in Britian.
  • Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre was caused by the tensions that had been growing since the British Troops had arrived in the colonies, and were enforcing harsh tax rules. This resulted in the killing of five men, by British Regulars.
  • Tea Act

    This was an act to help save the East India Company, which caused monopoly on the American Tea trade.

    The Boston Tea Party was a protest against the monopoly on the American tea trade. The protestors raided three tea ships and threw 342 chests of tea into the harbor.

    The First Continental Congress met to discuss the colonies resistance to the new taxes.
  • 2nd Contential Congress

    2nd Contential Congress
    At the Second Contential Congress, the colonies decided to finally break away completely from Great Britain. They also dicussed if they were going to print paper money, and discussed details about forming the American Army.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    The Declaration of Independence declared that the colonies were officially seperate from the British Empire. They were all independent states.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    The Treaty of Paris was an agreement to end the American Revolutionary War. It was signed by Great Britain and the United States of America.
