This was USSR's idea to block itself and other communist nations from contact and dependency on non-communist nations. Sometimes countries were even split in half because of this. -
Potsdam Conference
This conference was when Truman - Stalin and British divide up Europe.And when the cold war really got started because after they divided up everything they started to try and get more land. -
USA drops Atom bomb on Hiroshima
This is when the USA drops the first atomic bomb during war. It killed about 100,000 people within a few seconds. -

Russia joins near the end of the world because they wanted a piece of the action and the rewards they would get when they would win. -
Containment
The containment of the world was a product of the Cold War, this policy was a response to a series of moves by the Soviet Union to enlarge communist influence in Eastern Europe, China, Korea, Africa, and Vietnam. It represented a middle-ground position between appeasement and rollback. -
Communists seize power in Poland
This is when the communism really starts getting bigger and taking other countries. Poland was forcesd into doing this. They didn't give them an option to leave it either. -

This is where the USA would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them from falling into the Soviet sphere. -

This is when the country Isreal formed. It is the worlds only Jewish majority and democracy. It was formed so the jews would have a place of their own after the suffering and presucaution during ww2. -
Marshall Plan
This plan was to help Europeon Countries rebuild by giving them money, people, and other things. The United States did this in hopes of having those countries stay away from communism and go to capitalism. It worked a little bit. -
Apartheid
This was when the Blacks in South Africa were forced to live in homland areas called Bantustans and could only live outside those areas if they had a permit. This is when Whites still controlled a lot over in africa. -
Berlin Air lift
This is when the United states starts sending supplies into berling by airplane. This was to overcome the USSR's attempt to block us from supplying berlin. -
Berlin Blockade
This was the first of many confortation that would happen during the cold war. During the blockade the USSR stop all traffic coming in and out of berlin. We responded by sending in supplies by air. -
NATO
This Organization which is still around today, was developed by the allies in an attempt to keep peace around the world. -
Soviet Union explodes its first atomic bomb
This is when the Soviet Union enters in to the big leagues where nuclear war is now a threat. -
Communists win Chinese Civil War
This helps coummunism a good foot hole in the world. by taking china communism can really start spreading through out asia. It really helps during Korean and Vietnam wars. -

During the mid 1950's several countries started using nuclear power for more things than just war. Its energy is dependable and powerful. -
Domino Theory
This theory was the idea that if one country fell to communism other countries next to it would fall. This scared many capitalist countries. This is why we fought in korea and vietnam. -
Korean War
This war was fought between south korea which was supported by the U.N. and primaryly the USA vs. North Korea which is supported by the china and USSR. It lasted three years and ended in a cease fire. -
KGB established
The KGB was formed because the USSR needed their own intelligence agency. They are the equivilent to the C.I.A. The KGB really helped them get secrets during the cold war. They were also secret police. -
CIA helps overthrow unfriendly regimes in Iran and Guatemala
The USA did this to get more controll over oil, They sent the cia in to topple those governments so the usa could set up a government that would help the USA. -
Vietnam War
Was fought between North Vietnam which was supported by communist USSR and South Vietnam which was supported by USA and other capitalist nations. It lasted as a whole for 20 years. But only about 9 years of serious fighting from the USA's men and women. North Vietnam won. -
Sputnik 1
This is when USSR launched its first succesful satilite into space. It could transmit radio signals and it was only 2 and a half feet in diameter. -
Great Leap Forward
This is when china really started to expand and get better as a whole country. For about 3 years china used its great population to help inprove the country in a communism point of view. After this they just kept getting more powerful. -
The U-2 incident
during the presidency of Dwight Eisenhower and during the leadership of Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, when a United States U-2 spy plane was shot down over the airspace of the Soviet Union. -
O.P,E,C.
This organization stands for, Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. It is an oil cartel whose mission is to coordinate the policies of the oil-producing countries. This is where countries who have oil can make sure they are getting treated fairly. -
Bay of Pigs
This was a failed invasion of cuba by counter-revolutionary forces helped by the C.I.A. This took place of three days and at the end it failed. The reason we did this was to stop Castro's rein over cuba because he was becoming an ally with the USSR. -
Tsar Bomb
This is the most powerful nuclear bomb ever made. It was developed by the USSR to show how powerful they are. The explosion could be seen from 620 miles away. The Mushroom Cloud was 40 miles high. A shock wave was observed in the air at Dikson settlement (430 mi) away; windowpanes were partially broken to distances of 560 miles. The bomb was equivilent to 50 megatons of TNT. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
This is the first time in histroy that the world could have gone into a complete nuclear war. USSR put nuclear weapons in cuba and was transporting the missiles there. -

This rifle revolutionized warfare forever. It could shoot a 5.56 mm round 500 yards away accurately and was semiautomatic, 3 round brust, or fully automatic. -

Is the finals for the NFL Season. The last two best teams play each other in a chance to win the trophy and glory that comes with it. Since it started there has been a game every year. -

This Attack was a huge hit to to South Korean army personal and USA personal. During this attack was when the viet cong organized several attacks to happen at the same time. Many military bases were hit hard. This went on for a few months. -

This happened because the czechs wanted to become free and capitalist. But the soviets didn't want that so when the czechs start the uprising the soviets send out their military to stop it at any means possible. -

This was when Richard Nixon was accused and resigned because it was found out that he sanctioned the spying of the Democratic National Convention. He never went to jail becaue he resigned and he vice president pardoned him of any crime. -
1972 Olympics/
This is where Palinstine terrorist took the isrealie olympic team hostage and ended up killing them. In retaliation Isreal blew Palistine to up a lot. and found and killed the ones responsibe for the kidnapping. -
Soviet and Cuban forces help install Communist government in Angola.
They do this to spread communism so that they can get more people on their side than on the capitalist side. Also becuae it was by capitalist countries so it would give them a better attack position if war broke out. -
Camp David Accords
This was a peace agreement between Egypt and Isreal. It took about 13 days to do and was done in secrect. It was to try and stop the countries from attacking each other. It was also to deal with terrortories. -

He was the one who overthrew the old shaw of iran and became the new one. He was infamous for the helping in the hostage of americans during the 1979 iran revolution. -
Iran hostage crisis
This is where about 100 american who were over at the american embassy in iran were taken hostage in exchange for military equipment and suppiles so iran could fight there enemy. They ended up getting what they wanted when Regan was elected. -

They invaded Afghanistan because they need a better position against iraq which sided with USA. It lasted nine years before they withdrew. -

These reforms were pretty much the down fall of the USSR. The term Perestroika refers to the reconstruction of the political and economic system established by the Communist Party. And Glasnost means transparencey or openness. -
Mikhail Gorbachev becomes leader of the Soviet Union
When Mikhail Gorbachev becomes the leader he soon starts getting rid of the old ways and turning the USSR into a more capitalist way. He starts policies like glasnost and other things. -
NAFTA
This was an agreement Following diplomatic negotiations dating back to 1986 among the three nations. This agreement would eliminate certain barriers that hurt trading amoung north american countries. -
Tiananmen Square
This event was a student-led demonstrations in Beijing in the that received broad support from city residents and exposed deep splits within China's political leadership but were forcibly suppressed by hardline leaders who ordered the military to enforce martial law in the country's capital.Several People died in all of this.
