  • Yalta Conference

    Joseph Stalin, Franklin Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill met to discuss the post-war world. They Agree on the division of Germany and its capital city Berlin into 4 zone of influence and have Germany pay reparations, de-militarize, and de-nazify. Stalin agrees to enter the war against the Japanese and agrees to join the United Nations as a member of Security Council (veto power).
  • Potsdam Conference

    Stalin, Churchill, Clement Atlee, Harry Truman met in the final conference of the war. With the new US President Truman with a tougher stance towards the USSR than Roosevelt and the tested Atomic Bomb put US in a stronger position to negotiate. US no longer needs USSR in Japan.US/Britain openly argue with USSR about the details of how to divide Germany, the amount of reparations Germany had to pay, and Russian influence over countries in Eastern Europe.
  • United Nations formed

    With a purpose to bring all nations of the world together to work for peace and development, based on the principles of justice, human dignity and the well-being of all people, the United Nations was formed.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Supporting countries that reject Communism, US sends $400 million to Greece and Turkey.
  • The Marshall Plan

    US provided $12.5 billion to help rebuild Western Europe
  • NATO

    The US and its allies create a mutual defense pact in 1949 called NATO which states an attack on any member nation will be met with a response of physical force
  • China's Communism

    China falls to Communism and signs a treaty of friendship with the USSR
  • Berlin Blockade

    One of first acts of Cold War aggression, USSR block off access to W. Berlin, under Allies to force the Western powers to allow the Soviet zone to start supplying Berlin with food and fuel, giving the Soviets practical control over the city. The allies airlifted supplies into the city or nearly a year until the Soviets until they gave up
  • Korean War

    North Korean invades the South in 1950 with the use of Soviet weapons and supplies. The US/UN forces come to aid South Korea and push NK back up. With defeat looking likely, Communist China commits 300,000 troops to NK and retake Seoul
  • Arms Race

    Both nations commit a large amount of money to build up their nation’s military strength over the next several year
  • Death of Stalin

    Died due to stroke
  • The Warsaw Pact

    The USSR creates its own defense pact with its member nations in Eastern Europe
  • Space Race

    A competition between US and USSR over space accomplishments including sending a man to the moon and building a satellite.
  • The Announcing of Vietnam's attack on US

    President Lyndon Johnson told Congress that North Vietnamese patrol bots had attacked two US destroyers on the Gulf of Tonkin. It was the main cause of the start of the Vietnamese War.
  • Vietnam War

    Communist North Vietnam supported by the Soviets with weapons and money. South Vietnam supported by the US with weapons, money, also hundreds of troops. The US feared the spread of Communism and got directly involved in an unpopular war. 'Domino Theory’ that if Vietnam fell in Communism, all Eastern Asian countries would fall too, it was in order to stop the spread of Communism.
  • Call of SALT

    As the initials for the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, Nixon signed the SALT treaty with Brezhnev limiting levels the number of IBM (Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles) used in each country.
  • SALT II Agreement

    Put further limits on the number of missiles and bombers US and USSR could have.
  • Gorbachev becomes new leader of USSR

    Becomes the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Soviet Union.
  • Policy of Glasnost

    Meaning openness, the policy made by Gorbachev, had the government and industry more efficient and less corrupt.
  • Policy of Perestroika

    The policy of restructuring done by Gorbachev along with Glasnost.
  • End of the Cold War

    Due to the relaxing tensions between US and USSR and along with the collapse of the Soviet Union (due to Nationalism), the Cold War ended.
