    Vietnam War

    The war started because China had become communist and communists were in control of North Vietnam. The USA was afraid that communism would spread to South Vietnam and then the rest of Asia. They decided to send money, supplies, and military advisers to help the South Vietnamese Government.

    Berlin Airlift

    Soviet forces blockaded rail, road, and water access to Allied-controlled areas of Berlin. The United States and the United Kingdom responded by airlifting food and fuel to Berlin from Allied airbases in western Germany. Ended with the Soviet forces lifting the blockade on land access to the western.
  • Creation Of NATO

    Creation Of NATO
    Was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. The purpose was to secure peace in Europe, promote cooperation among its members, and guard their freedom.

    Northern Korean People's Army invaded South Korea in a coordinated general attack at several strategic points along the 38th parallel, the line dividing communist North Korea from the non-communist.
  • Creation of Warsaw Pact

    Creation of Warsaw Pact
    Also known as the Treaty of Friendship. Created on May 14th, 1955, immediately after the acquisition of West Germany by the Alliance. It complimented the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, which was the regional economic organization set up by the Soviet Union for the communist states of Central and Eastern Europe.

    The USSR launched Sputnik, a basketball-sized satellite that became the first manmade object to orbit the Earth. On October 4, 1957, the USSR launched Sputnik, the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth.
