    In 1947 President Truman ask for $400 million in military and economic aid for Greece and Turkey.With America’s help these countries were able to not fall under communist power. This became known as the Truman Doctrine. In this time Secretary Marshall saw that other Europe countries were in need too, he created the marshall plan to help rebuild Europe countries. The United Nations was many nations coming together to end disputes peacefully and without war. Over the years they helped fight hunger

    Berlin is one of Germanys largest cities and during the war is was separated into four parts.In 1948 they wanted to reunite the four parts, but Stalin did not agree.In 1961 the East german government built the Berlin Wall to cut off East Berlin from West Berlin. This cut off families and friends, anyone who tried to climb the wall was shot and killed.

    The United States Started alliances with other friendly nations. Then in 1949 they all started the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO ). The purpose of NATO was to defend western european countries from soviet armies. The countries that were involved with NATO were ; Turkey, Greece, France, Great Britain, Portugal, Italy, West Germany, Norway, Denmark, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Belgium and a small part of ireland.

    Mccarty was a man from wisconsin who had claimed he had a list of 205 of State department employees who were in the communist party. although he was never able to prove this it caused many people to be fired and accused of communism. In the United states two people by the name of Ethel and Jules Rosenberg were accused of communism and were killed even though there were protest for their release.

    The gulf of Tonkin resolution gave approval for expansion of the vietnam war. Ho chi Minh Was the leader of communist north vietnam. Vietcong were fighters who make hit and run attacks on the enemy, they opposed Diem. Vietcong success worried american leaders. The united states wanted to expand the military force, so they created a draft. This draft was a mandatory enlistment of the young boys of America.

    The start of the korean war was in 1950. The 38th parallel was the dividing line between North Korea and South Korea. This conflict happened because after WWII the United states and Soviet Union decided it would be good to split North and South korea but then eventually get the back together. When the Soviet Union was gathering countries for its pact, other countries were afraid to join, but unfortunately the Soviet Union dominated them.     anuary 1968 the Vietcong launched surprise attacks on cities throughout south vietnam.This attack became known as the tet offensive because it took place in tet the vietnamese new year. During the end the american and south vietnam forces pushed the vietcong back but it still was a victory for the vietcong. This showed that even with american forces vietnam was still not safe from veitcong attacks.

    Glasnost ids the Russian term for speaking out openly. Mikhail Gorbachev Was a new soviet leader who rose to power in 1985. He believed that major reforms would allow the soviet system survive. He hoped that that glasnost would help his citizens find solutions to social problems without pressing economic problems.
