    President Truman asked for US assistance for Greece and Turkey to end communist domination of the two nations. This was known as the official declaration of the cold war.

    The Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was established for European nations to create a plan for their economic reconstruction and for the US to provide economic assistance. On December 19, 1947, President Truman sent a message agreeing to give assistance to Europe
  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO
    NATO was established to coordinate the military defenses of member nations against possible Soviet aggression. It was made by 12 nations including the US.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    The battle was between North (communist) and South non-communist) Korea. That fighting was in South Korea. The US and the UN stepped in to break up the fight. After this, American land, sea, and air forces to Korea to help break up the fight.

    US creates and tests the hydrogen bomb
    After the US lost the battle of the first nuclear bomb, with hard work, the US had created and successfully detonated the world’s first hydrogen bomb. This bomb created a crater a mile wide.

    Warsaw was established in reaction of NATO. It was made for the same reason as NATO for the Soviets to protect themselves too.
  • The Vietnam War

    The Vietnam War
    The battle was between North Vietnam with their southern allies and South Vietnam and their ally being the US. The fighting occurred in South Vietnam because of the Ho Chi Minh trail. In the end the North Vietnamese won the battle.
  • Bay of Pigs

    The battle was between Cuba (the leader was Castro), and the US (the leader was President Kennedy). This was an invasion of Cuba that was unsuccessful. The Cuban forces took down the Brigade 2506 and the US was forced to surrender.
  • The Berlin Wall Goes Up

    The Berlin Wall Goes Up
    In East Berlin soldiers with trucks started to build a wall to separate East and West Berlin at about midnight. Streets and homes were torn up to make this huge wall.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    This occurred in Cuba. The US spy’s discovered that the Soviets were building medium-range missile sites in Cuba. The US went through Cuba to find and take control over the missiles. The US seemed to win but Cuba had more security.

    Not only were there bloody battles, but there was a battle between the US and Soviet Union to be known as the first nation to have a man on the moon. The US won this battle.

    The US and the Soviet Union battled against each other in the Olympic men’s basketball game. In the end no one really knew who won. The Soviet Union received the gold but the US didn’t accept the silver.

    The US and Soviet Union battle again with the men’s Olympic hockey game. In the end the Soviet Union was surprised to be defeated by the US winning gold

    This was in East and West Germany. On November 9th the East German government announced that the wall would be taken down and the two sides of Germany could reunite.

    The soviet flag flew for the last time on Christmas in Moscow. Days before, representatives from the 11 Soviet republics met and declared they would establish a commonwealth of independent states. This was the fall of the Soviet Union!
