  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift

    The Soviet Union blockaded railroad and water access to areas that were controlled by the allies. Responding, the United States and Kingdom airlifted food and gas to Berlin by using allied air bases in western germany. On May 12 the Soviet forces raised the blockade on land access.

    Creation of NATO

    More known as the Washington Treaty created by the United States, Canada, and other Western European nations. This provided security against the Soviet Union. It was the first peace during the military alliance the United States entered into outside of the Western part of the Hemisphere.

    Korean War

    The war was fought between North and South Korea. North Korea invaded South Korea which followed rebellions in the South. The war was not fought alone, the North was supported by China and the Soviet, the south being supported by the US and more allied countries.

    Creation of Warsaw Pact

    The pact was a defense treaty established by the Soviet Union and other satellite states in central and eastern europe. The Warsaw pact was to agree to refrain from violence. This created the ability to build up the Soviet hold on the other contributing countries.

    Vietnam War

    The war was fought between the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its allies, the United States. Two sides wanted Vietnam to be reunified but Emperor Bao and Ho wanted different things. Ho’s forces took power in the north.
  • Sputnik

    Sputnik

    Sputnik was a USSR rocket which led in the cold war space race. Sputnik was the first manmade satellite object to orbit planet earth. The satellite sent radio signals back to earth for almost 3 weeks before its battery ran out.
  • Construction of Berlin Wall

    Construction of Berlin Wall

    The wall rose between 11 and 15 feet high and up 96 miles. In two short weeks East Germany had finished a makeshift barbed wire and concrete block wall. This physically divided one side of the city.
  • Cuban Missile  Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis

    The 13 day confrontation between the US and Soviet Union which led to the United States firing of missiles in Italy and Turkey. In retaliation the Soviet deployed missiles in Cuba. This escalated into an international crisis, making this a moment in nuclear war preparation.
  • Moon landing

    Moon landing

    On Apollo 11 the astronaut Neil Armstrong took his and the first mankind step onto the moon. Armstrong and Aldrin spent 21 hours on the moon. Apollo 11 returned with the men on July 24th.
  • Destruction of  Berlin Wall

    Destruction of Berlin Wall

    Five million people gathered in East Berlin in a huge protest. People used hammers and picks to knock down the wall. The Berlin Wall being destroyed was the first step towards German reunification.
