    World War II had left North and South Korea- two different countries divided at the 38th parallel. North Korea was communist whereas South Korea was democratic. North Korea invaded South Korea by crossing the 38th parallel, triggering the Korean War. Truman sent in troops to support South Korea in an attempt to prevent a further spread of communism. The war ended in a stalemate.

    "Bay of Pigs" Invasion
    Eisenhower gave the CIA permission to secretly train Cuban exiles for an invasion of Cuba in hopes of creating an uprising and ultimately overthrow the communist government under Castro. Kennedy was elected and agreed to follow through with Eisenhower's plan. The invasion was largely unsuccessful, many exiles were killed or imprisoned and the United States failed to prevent communism in Cuba.

    The Soviet Union was supplying Cuba with nuclear weapons. Soviet missile bases in Cuba were established from which missiles could easily reach the United States. After a few tense days, Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles from Cuba if the U.S. promised not to invade Cuba. The U.S. removed missiles from Turkey as well.
