    The fight was between the established Kingdom of Greece and the Communist Party of Greece. The rebels were supported by the USSR. The Kingdom of Greece won the war.

    Germany was divided into 4 sections. The U.S., France, and the United Kingdom all had sections in the west. The Soviet Union had the whole eastern side of Germany.

    Also known as the Chinese peoples war of Liberation. It was a civil war between the communists in China and the Republic of China. The communist party won and China became a communist country.

    It’s real name is the Economic Recovery Act if 1948. Renamed after George Marshall who came up with the idea. The Marshall plan is to provide economic assistance to restore postwar Europe.

    Berlin Blockade and Airlift

    This is the first major spark of the Cold War. The Soviet Union blockaded the western part of Berlin that was run by the western countries so that supplies couldn’t get in by cutting off the railways and roads. In response the western countries used planes to fly in supplies.

    The Korean war started with North Korea invading South Korea. North Korea was supported by the Soviet Union and China while South Korea was backed by the United Nations mainly the United States. It ended with an Armistice on July 27, 1953
  • Cuban Revolution

    Cuban Revolution

    Armed revolt led by Fidel Castro and his fellow revolutionaries. The goal was to overthrow the government and form a new revolutionary government. It was a success and Castro became the new leader of Cuba.

    Formation of the Eastern Bloc

    At the end of WWII, the Soviet Union created the Eastern Bloc which is the group of countries in the east along with the Soviet Union. It’s initial goal was to fight the Germans, but later on the Soviets used this to invade and annex several countries as Soviet Socialist Republics. They were able to sue this through a pact with Germany.

    War between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by the Communist countries of the Soviet Union and China where as South Vietnam is supported by anti-communist countries with the United States. The war lasted almost 20 years and had direct U.S. involvement.

    Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Influenced relations between the U.S., Soviet Union, and Cuba. It was a failed landing operation on the southwest coast of Cuba. They were Cuban exiles who were against Fidel Castro’s revolution. The Cuban exiles were financed by the U.S. government. The goal was for the U.S. to overthrow Castro and stop the communist government that was being formed.

    Berlin was divided into 2 main sectors. One was communist and the other was democratic. The people from the communist side were fleeing into the democratic side. In response the communist side built a wall to stop people from the communist side from entering the democratic side.

    A 35-day confrontation between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. Soviet missiles were seen being built of Cuba by an American plane. With Cuba being so close to the U.S., the United States got worried of a potential attack. The U.S. blocked off Cuba from the Soviet Union which almost created an all out war.

    Rise of the Palestine Liberation Organization

    The PLO was used to represent Palestinian people. It’s goal was to unite Arab groups. They also wanted to liberate Palestine.

    The U.S. overthrew the government. They did this because they feared that Allende would get rid of democracy and make Chile a communist country. Allende killed himself as the U.S. troops were trying to storm his fortress.

    The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and had a marxist leader take over. They ran into resistance by resistance fighters. The U.S. backed these fighters and helped them try to stop the Soviet Union.

    The communist government in Poland made work rough. The workers got tired of it and decided to protest against it. The government tried using martial law to destroy the union but it failed. This led to the spread of anti-communist ideas.

    Student led protests. Armed military and tanks fired of the protesters that tried to stop them from entering Tiananmen square. There were thousands wounded, but the death toll varies.

    Beginning of the end for the Soviet Union and communism. Came down after mass protests in east Berlin. When the wall came down it also was the end of the Iron Curtain.

    The start of the fall of the Soviet Union was when the Berlin wall came down. That started a serious of event that led to the internal disintegration of the Soviet Union. When the Soviet Union fell several republics were able to gain freedom from them.

    4 coordinated attacks on major U.S. places/buildings. They were carried out by members of the terrorist group known as Al-Qaeda. The members hijacked planes and flew them into major U.S. buildings.
