The division and how Germany would be handle after WW2 was decided at the Yalta Conference. The spilt up of Germany was decided by the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union. Germany was spilt up into four zones occupied by the US, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. Tensions between the countries then lead to other conflicts like the Berlin Blockade and the Airlift. -
The war between Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist Party. The war broke out immediately after World War 2. The war was on communism. The two sides tried to meet but it did not go well and and the two sides were still fighting in the Civil War. After the war China did not have much ties to any other countries because they had broken its trust. -
The Berlin blockade was an attempt by the Soviet Union to limit the US, France, and Great Britain from getting supplies to Berlin. The Soviets blocked railroads, roads, and canals from Berlin. The people living in Berlin became desperate because they didn’t have food, medicine, fuel, water, and electricity. The Western Powers then came up with a way to airlift supplies to Berlin. It was the first major conflict of the Cold War. -
The Greek Civil War started just a few days after World War 2 ended. The British, Soviets, and American forces opened fire on a crowd to try and control them. The Greek government wanted disarmament of the partisans. The Greek Government suffered 48,000 casualties. The war lasted for for about 6 years. -
The Marshall Plan was also called the European Recovery Program. It was a US program to help Western Europe recover from World War 2. -

The Soviet Union created the Eastern Bloc. The Eastern Bloc is a group of Communist States from Central and Eastern Europe. The Soviet Union invaded and annexed several countries to create the Eastern Bloc. -
The Hungarian Uprising was a country wide revolution against the Hungarian People’s Republic. They were fighting because of some of the rules imposed by the USSR. The revolution all started because of students meeting to discuss ways to end some of these rules. Many Hungarians were arrested and sentenced. The revolution stopped and the country became Hungry. -
The Cuban Revolution was led by Fidel Castro to get rid of Fulgencio Batista. After the Spanish- American War, Cuba became a republic but Batista became a dictator. Castro meet in Mexico with a bunch of his military leaders to figure out how to get rid of Batista. Batista put up a fight until Castro led him off the island in 1959. -
The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a failed CIA mission to push Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, out of power. The US keep trying to missions but they kept failing. The United States then thought they could invade Cuba but surrendered in less than 24 hours of fighting. Kennedy tried to have the Cuban leader assassinated because he was such a threat to the United States. -
East Berlin begin to build a wall between them and West Berlin. The wall was built out of wire and concrete. The Berlin Wall is a symbol of the Cold War. The wall went up as soon of World War 2 was over because of how Germany was to be spilt up. There was only 3 checkpoints that allowed the citizens of Berlin to go to the other side of Berlin. -
The leaders of the United States and the Soviet Union had a military and political standoff. The Soviet Union built a nuclear weapon plant in Cuba just 90 miles from the US. The standoff came to end when Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles as long as the United States did not invade Cuba. The while crisis only lasted 13 days. -
The leader of Czechoslovakia, Alexander Dubcek decided that he should introduce a series of far-fetching ideas that include political, economic, and increased freedom of speech. He was trying to establish communism with a human face. This brief period was called the Prague Spring. His reforms were repealed and Gustav Husak took over and reestablished an authoritarian Communist regime in the country. -
The Vietnam War was a long and costly war. It was between North Vietnam and South Vietnam with the help of the United States. More than 3 million people were killed in the war while over half of the dead were Vietnamese. The United States and North Vietnam had a final peace agreement in 1973. But the North and South Vietnam keep fighting each other for 2 1/2 more years before the war finally came to an end. The war all started over communism. -
The Solidarity Movement in Poland happened because the citizens of Poland did not like the Communist ideas. Protests in Poland started in the 1980s due to food shortages and high food prices. -
The Soviet Union invades Afghanistan under the Soviet-Afghan Friendship Treaty of 1978. The Soviets sent in military aircrafts and people on December 24, 1979. The Soviets were meet with fierce fire and when Gorbachev became a leader he decided it was time to get out of Afghanistan. During and after the war the rise of terrorism increased due to Osama bin Laden. -
The Tiananmen Square protests were student led protests in China calling for democracy, free speech, and free press. The Chinese authorities then decided that they would increase their aggression by shooting live rounds into the crowd. There are estimates that hundreds of thousands were killed as well as 10,000 people were arrested. -
The Berlin Wall is a symbol of the Cold War. The East Berlin’s Communist Party announced that it would change relations with the West side of Berlin. The citizens of Berlin were very excited and more than 2 million people participated in the celebration. People of Berlin helped take the wall down and bulldozers pulled down section by section. The reunification was not made official until almost a year later. -
The Soviet Union was strong until the leader Gorbachev decided to use a hands off approach. The republics Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia declared their independence from the Soviet Union. Gorbachev was placed on house arrest and the Soviet Union keep falling while the military started taking over. Gorbachev then resigned on Christmas Day in 1991. The Soviet Union had officially fallen from its reign. -
The attacks were carried out by a group called al Qaeda. The hijacker’s took over four planes and crashed two planes into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and crashed the fourth plane in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In all four attacks almost 3,000 people were killed. The leader Osama bin Laden was killed in the Operation Neptune Spear.
