  • Yalta Conference

    the "Big 3" meet together again for the final plans of Germanys defeat, post war Europe, set dates for United Nations conference, and conditions for the Soviet Union's entry into the war with Japan...meeting took place in Yalta, USSR
  • WW2 Europe campaign ends

    USSR marches into Berlin and defeats Germany but Hitler and his wife commit suicide. The European campaign is over.
  • Potsdam Conference

    The "Big 3" meet to request an unconditional surrender of Japan, Potsdam Agreement on policy for Germany
  • Hiroshima

    Before the bombings took place, the United States demanded the unconditional surrender of Japan. After a week of not hearing a response, Truman authorized the use of dropping an Atomic Bomb on Japan. Hiroshima was the first target but the bomb missed the initial target by 800 feet. atleast 70,000 wounded and atleast 20,000 killed
  • Nagasaki

    3 days after the Hirsoshima bombing took place, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki. this killed an estimated 40,000 people. on August 15th, Japan announces their unconditional surrender thus ending WW2
  • Truman doctrine announced

    President Truman asked for 400 million dollars in military and economic aid for Greece and Turkey and that this doctrine would guide U.S. diplomacy for the next 40 years
  • Berlin Wall

    Constructed by the USSR and East germany, the communists viewed the United Nations as facists and in particular West Germany. This was to prevent outside influence on East Germany and was part of Stalins Iron Curtain
  • NATO is formed

    Made to protect the "allies" post world war 2 and was formed from Stalins Iron Curtain
  • USSR explodes their first atomic bomb

    The USSR exploded their very first atomic bomb and showed the world that the USSR became a Nuclear Power.
  • China becomes Communist

    China's current government is over thrown by Communist Mao Zedong and becomes part of Stalins Iron Curtain
  • Korean War

    North Korea invades South Korea and drives the South Koreans near the ocean. The U.N. sends in military aid from th United States and pushes North Korea near the boarder of China. China thinks they will soonn be attacked and counter attack and push the United States to the original boundries. this is the first war in which the United States did not win or lose
  • SEATO is formed

    SEATO is formed to help prevent the spread of Communism in south east asia and is part of the idea of containment
  • Warsaw Pact formed

    a formation of communist countries in eastern europe and is the response to NATO. most of these countries are what make up the Iron Curtain
  • First summit meeting

    known as the Geneva Summit, the leaders of Franc, the United States, the USSR, and Britain held a conference to discuss peace. although it had no lasting impact, it did help brin about the idea of global security
  • USSR launches first man made satelite into space

    the USSR launches the first man made satelite into space but is unmanned. this showed the world that the USSR were ahead of the united states and had more advanced technology
  • Cuba becomes Communist

    Fidel Castro overthrew the current cuban government and declared cuba a communist country. this gave the USSR an area near the United states to spy on and launch missles if needed
  • Bay of Pigs invasion

    the United States trained cuban rebels and gave them WW2 era weapons and vehicles to take back their country. the invasion force was mostly cuban rebels but ultimately failed. the United States were then publically humiliated when they were revealed to be behind the invasion
  • East Germany builds berlin wall

    East Germany closes the Berlin boarder and starts building a wall to keep the two different beliefs seperate (communism and democracy).
  • Vietnam War

    the United states became involved in South Vietnam to continue the idea of containment and to help the south vietnamese stay a democracy. many americans died and the general perception from the public was negative. the United states was forced to evacuate the country and let the vietnamese fight for themselfs
  • Cuban Missle Crisis

    when the united states spy planes located USSR missles and missle sites in cuba, most of the american public was afraid. president Kennedy decided to blockade cuba rather than attack for fear of retailiation and utter destruction of the world. the blackade succeeded and the cuban missle crisis was finally over
  • China becomes a nuclear power

    China explodes their very first nuclear bomb and is now realized as a nuclear power holder and became the 5th nuclear power in the world
  • President Nixon visits China

    President nixon is inited to china to help discuss the idea of peace. this would be the first time that the United States and china had dicussions ever since china became a communist country. this was generally well percieved from the american public and would help end the cold war
