  • Joseph Stalin

    Joseph Stalin
    Born on December 18, 1878 in Gori, Georgia, Stalin was the leader and dictator of the Soviet Union. After the end of the Second World War, Stalin was committed to taking ideological and political control of Eastern Europe. He saw this as a buffer zone against the West. This attempt to control Eastern Europe was one of the main factors in the birth of the Cold War. He died on March 5, 1953 in Moscow, Russia at the age of 74.
  • Dwight Eisenhower

    Dwight Eisenhower
    Born on October 14, 1890 in Denison, Texas, Eisenhower was supreme military commander of the Allied forces. While President of the US (1953-1961), he created domino theory arguing Communism should be stopped before allowing it to spread. He ended the Korean War in 1953. He tried to limit nuclear weapon proliferation, but this was unsuccessful and nuclear stockpiles increased on both sides.He died on March 28, 1969 in Washington, D.C. at the age of 78.
  • John F. Kennedy

    John F. Kennedy
    Born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts, US President Kennedy ran from 1961-1963. As President he helped to get rid of the Cuban Missile Crisis which came close to being a bigger problem. He gave a famous speech in West Berlin saying that the Berlin Wall showed the failure of Communism. In 1961, he ordered the expanse of the Space Race program. He died in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 at the age of 46.
  • Iron Curtain

    Iron Curtain
    The term "iron curtain" was first used by Winston Churchill, the prime minister of Britain, who used it to show the boundaries of the Western Nationalist side of Europe and the Eastern Communist side of Europe.
  • Truman Doctrine

    Truman Doctrine
    The Truman Doctrine was created to help stop the spread of communism to other countries. Truman did not want countries to fall under the hands of a dictator and work with the USSR against Russia. Truman stated in a speech to the Congress that he " believe[s] it must be the policy of the United States to support free people . . . resisting attempted subjugation [control] by armed minorities or by outside pressures."
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    The Berlin Airlift was a military mission to take food, fuel and other vital provisions into West Berlin made by the United States, Great Britain and other western European nations.
  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    The Marshall Plan was created for U.S. to help out war torn countries after WW2. They supplied them with resources and food. It was also created so that the U.S. would help countries rebuild themselves instead of turning to communism.
  • NATO

    NATO
    NATO was an alliance made between the U.S. and its other Nationalist allies. Its purpose was to create a mutual defense pact aimed at containing possible Soviet aggression and blocking Soviet expansion into Europe during the Cold War. It included Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Greece, Turkey, West Germany, and Spain joined later.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    A war that occurred between North Korea and South Korea. The U.S. supported the nationalist South while Russia supported the communist North. An armistice was signed on July 27, 1953, ending the war in Korea. North and South Korea remain separate and occupy almost the same territory they had when the war began.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw Pact was an alliance made by Russia and its communist allies. Its members were the Soviet Union, Albania, Poland, Romania, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. The treaty is named after the city they signed the treaty in, Warsaw, Poland.

    Sputnik
    First artificial satellite to be launched into space. It was made by the Soviets. The U.S. was frightened by this. They thought that the Soviets were going to hurt them.
  • Space Race

    Space Race
    The space race between the USSR and the U.S. was a race to see who could be better at creating things for use in space.
  • U- 2 Incident

    U- 2 Incident
    This incident was when the USSR shot down an American spy plane and captured its pilot, Francis Gary Powers.

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    President John F. Kennedy ordered the CIA to train a group of Cuban exiles and have them attack Cuba. They planned on trying to take over the communist government of Fidel Castro. This attack was an utter failure.

    This wall was built between the East nationalist side of Berlin and the West communist side of Berlin to stop people moving from the strict East to the West where they were able to get more freedom and better care than in the East.

    This is the point during the Cold War where the U.S. and the USSR were on the brink of nuclear conflict.

    SALT Agreements
    An agreement made by the United States and the USSR to restrain the arms race with nuclear weapons.

    Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
    The Soviet Union sent thousands of troops into Afghanistan and immediately captured Kabul, its capital, gaining political and military rule there.
