The act allowed people in the territories KAnsas and Nebraska to decide for themselves. The act was started by Stephen Douglas. They decided on their own whether slavery should have been allowed within the boarders. Compromise of 1820 prohibtied slavery north of the 36 30` line. Violence started about by John Brown. Kansas became "bleeding Kansas".

Dred Scott went in 1847. Ten years later the court was brought to the United States Supreme Court. This decided that all African Americans slaves and free people couldnt become citizen of the US. They could not sue the federal court. The Federal Government didnt have power to prohibit slavery in its territories.

The Democratic Party chose Charleston SC to choose their president. They were supporting slavery. Western states argued popular sovergnity. The Southern Party formed a group called the Whigs. Republicans the boarder states leagalize that no one could legalize slavery in the territories.

South Carolina seceded first in December 1860. By March 1861 six more states seceded. Lincoln was president at this time. After Fort Sumter Lincoln held a rebellion. The confedercy came up to eleven.

African Americans could not enlist in the Union Navy until the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The Proclamation was issed by Lincoln. The first regiment of African Americans was the 54th Massachusetts.

In Nov. 1863 President Lincoln dedicated some of the battlefeild as a cemetery in the Gettyburg address. Lincoln admonished that war was not between regions but a fight for freedom.

Congress granted the Freedman's Bureau. The job of the Bureau was to feed and clothe refugees. The Bureau also helped formely enslaved people find jobs. The Bureau did NOT provide land. It worked closely with Northern charaties educated former slaves.

Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth. He was attending a show with his wife in Ford's Theater. John Wilkes Booth left the scene after he shot Lincoln and his ditched the pistol that he commited the murder with. Lincoln was dead when doctor arrived.

In 1865 Lincoln met with his top generals. They discussed the end of the Civil War. General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant. He surrender to him in Appomattox Courthouse , VA.

In 1865 the 13th amendment is ratified. The amendment is about ending the institution of slavery. The ratification was eight months after the Civil War was over. The ratification showed the struggle against slavery. Everyone was oppose to slavery's expansion.

Congress introduced the 14th amendment. The amendment grantees : citizenship, due process, and equall protection. It expanded the civil rights to all americans.

The 15th amendment stated that all men have the right to vote. Even though the amendment was ratifeid on this date. It wasnt until a centry later the amendment came into play. The Voting Rights Act was passed before majority of African Americans could vote.
