    The Compromise of 1850
    California is admitted as a free state. Slave trade is abolished in the District of Columbia. This compromise tried to help to ease the tensions between the states about slavery. Although there were some pro south points in the compromise, some points were a victory for slavery.

    Uncle Toms 's Cabin
    Harriet Beecher Stowe publishes her novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Her book showed people how the slaves were treated and it became extremely popular. It opened the eyes of so many oblivious white people that did not realize how terrible slaves were treated.

    This document was the order given by Abraham Lincoln to free the slaves. It was an excecutive order. This paved the way for the passage of the 13th ammendment.
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

    Plessy vs. Ferguson
    This case declared that whites and blacks could be seperate, but equal. The white bathrooms, water fauctes, schools, etc. were all so much nicer than what the balck people got. They were anything but equal.

    In 1945, Jackie Robinson signed on to the Dodgers baseball team. He was not fully accepted and he was treated horribly by his team mates, baseball fans, and other baseball players as well.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    The court case declared that balck schools were not equal to white schools. This meant that white schools could have black children and vise versa. The first black girl to attend a white school was Ruby Bridges. Most white people were not happy with this and people tried to hurt her so she has some security and the her classmates were not kind either.

    Rosa Parks was a black women, tired and ready to go home after a long days work. When she refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white man she was arrested. Her actions started a bus boycot by the black community and she became a major part of history.

    Martin Luther King Jr, made his famous "I Had a Dream" speach were he spoke about his hopes and dreams. He hoped that some day everyone would be treated equally and there would be peace. We are working towards that dream and everyday we become more and more equal.

    The black panthers was a group of balck people that thought Martin Luther King Jrs non-violent way of trying to change things was not working. They wanted things to change fast and they were willing to be violent. They were active from 1966 till 1982.

    Martin Luther King Jr. was shot and killed while standing on a balcony. He was, and still is, such an importatnt figure in the fight for racial equality so this loss had a major impact on the world.

    Halle Berry was the first women to win an academy award for Best Actress for her role in "Monster's Ball". This opened a door for so many other black actresses. Also, black actor Denzel Washington won for Best Actor from the movie “Training Day” the same night. The 74th annual Oscars really gave other black actors hope.

    Barack Obama is the first black president. He has been in office for five years so far and is the 44th president of the United States. He also recieved a nobel peace prize in 2009.
