    Plessy v. Ferguson
    African American Homer Plessy sat in a whites only train car, so he got fined. Plessy's case appealing the fine reached the Supreme court which ruled that separate but equal public places were constitutional.

    Students holds first sit-in
    College students decided to protest segregation in public places like retaurants. The students coordinated sit-ins at the whites only parts of the restaurants and refused to move often getting themselves arrested.

    Morgan v. Virginia
    Irene Morgan refused to give up her seat on a interstate bus. Morgan was then arrested and sent to jail. The Supreme Court ruled that interstate buses couldn't be segregated.

    Brown vs. Board of Education VideoA black child had to walk 21 blocks to school even though there was a whites only elementary close by. The Supreme Court ruled that the segregation of school was unconstitutional.
  • Emmit Till is Killed

    Emmit Till is Killed
    Emmit Till was visiting relatives when he whistled at a white woman. Her husband then kidnapped Emmit and beat him. Till died and after an unfair trial Emmit's murderers were named innocent. Later Till's murderers would admit that they purposefully killed Emmit Till.

    Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat
    NAACP member Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery. Parks was then arrested and this led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

    Bus Segregation is Outlawed
    After Rosa Parks's incident the Montgomery bus boycott lasted for 381 days. Since 2/3 of the bus riders were Africans eventually the Supreme Court outlawed all bus segregation.
  • The Little Rock Nine are turned away

    The Little Rock Nine are turned away
    After the Brown v. Board of Education schools are no longer segregated. The NAACP organized 9 African students to attend at Central High School in Little Rock. Arkansas' governor Faubus sent the Arkansas National Guard to send them away.
  • The Little Rock Nine are admitted

    The Little Rock Nine are admitted
    After Governor Faubus refuses to allow the Little Rock Nine in the school President Eisenhower decides to step in. Eisenhower sends 1,000 troops of the National Guard to the school to ensure the students admittance and safety.

    Freedom Riders bus was set on fire
    Africans wanting to elminate segregation on buses were riding buses from Montgomery. One of the buses was set on fire while they were still inside.
  • Ole Miss becomes integrated

    Ole Miss becomes integrated
    Southern colleges were still segregated when a U.S Air Force veteran named James Meredith attempted to attend Ole Miss. Eventually Meredith was admitted but protests broke out similar to those in Little Rock.

    Children's Crusades in Birmingham
    1,000 African American children march in Birmingham, Alabama. Poeple watched on TV as the police released dogs on them and high-powered water hoses. 959 of the kids were arrested.

    250,000 people gathered at the Washington monument and marched to the Lincoln Memorial. At the Lincoln memorial Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I have a Dream" speech.
  • 16th Baptist Church is Bombed

    16th Baptist Church is Bombed
    In Birmingham, Alabama 16th Baptist was having a service when whites supporting segregation through a bomb through the window. The bomb killed four people and injured many.
  • Civil Rights act of 1964

    Civil Rights act of 1964
    Lyndon B. Johnson passed this act which ended discrimination of people based on gender, race, religion and nationality. The Civil Rights act of 1964 allowed everyone to be in the same public places.
