    International Aggreements

    On 10th December, The united nations general assembly adopted the UDHR, an international aggreement that outlined all right and freedoms that should be accorded to all people.

    "All we wanted was to go to school"

    On 17th May, The US supreme court had ruled that African American people were allowed to attend schools. Later that year, The Little Rock school board had aggred to desegregate it's schools.

    The Montgomery Bus Boycott

    On December 1st, An African American woman named Rosa Parks, sat halfway down a bus. When a white man got on, the bus driver asked her to make room for him, but Rosa refused. She then got arrested and charged with breaking the seregation laws.

    On one morning, Nine African American students enrolled at Little Rock Central High. During that year, The nine were verbally abused, Pushed down stairs and spat on. "There were atleast 100 bad kids and 1900 were silent witnesses" said one of the nine who was named Minnijean Brown Trickey.

    Black Power Movement

    After being arrested for the 27th time, Black activist Stokely Carmichael made a speech that would be known as the "Black Power Speech", in which he urged African Americans to 'unite', to recognise their herritage, and to build a sense of community. His book, 'Black Power: the politics of liberation', he outlined his case against white America. The book struck a chord with many young African Americans, who were frustrated by the slow pace of change and scorned the path of non-violent resistance
  • Dr Martin Luther King Jr and the importance of non-violence protest

    Made up of ministers and activists, the protest was led by a charismatic young civil rights campaigner named Martin Luther King Jr. One of Dr King's most well known actions was the march on Washington for jobs and freedom, where he delivered his most famous speech, remembered by the words, "I have a dream..."
