Charles Darwin

  • Birth

Born in Shrewsbury, England. Son to a doctor.
  • Period: to

    H.M.S. Beagle Expedition

Darwin's duty on the ship was as a naturalist. He spent his time studying and collecting samples of plants, animals, rocks, and fossils. Overtime, he would send back the samples he collected to England, where he studied them further once he returned. This is important since the research he conducted once he returned shaped his theory of natural selection. Which states that species who are better adapted to an environment will produce more offspring to genetically pass down those adaptions.
  • Published "The Origin of Species"

In 1859 Darwin published the book that he will always be known for, "On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection." In this book Darwin hypothesized that there was a common ancestor for all life. This was just the start of his published research into evolution. Additionally, in this book it suggested that Earth was a lot older than the commonly believed time of 6,000 years. https://youtu.be/UVx4Z3W6U-Y
  • Published "The Decent of Man"

In 1871 Darwin published “The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex”, a sequel of sorts to his most known book, “On the Origin of Species”. In this book he further established his argument that humans were products of evolution.
