Challenging Segregation and New Civil Rights Issues

  • Brown v. Board of Eductation

    This was a landmark for the SCOTUS case where the court declared the state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional.
  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    On this day, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus in Montgomery, Alabama to a white person. By Rosa Parks doing this it triggered a successful year-long boycott of the bus system.
  • Little Rock Nine

    The Federal Government used the military to uphold African American civil rights. Soldiers would escort nine African American students to a school in Little Rock, Arkansas to end racial segregation.
  • March on Washington

    This was planned by Martin Luther King and Philip Randolph. Approximately 200,000-300,000 people protested in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Also, on this day is when Martin Luther King gave his famous "I have a dream" speech.
  • Civil Rights Act

    This act was introduced by President Kennedy, and executed by Lyndon B. Johnson. This bill was called for the banning of discrimination based on race and nullified local segregation.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination

    This was when Martin Luther King traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to support a sanitation workers strike. Where he was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel. This action caused riots to break out in over 110 cities nationwide.
