    I started to pronounce words and Spanish, but I was exposed to the English language through television programs and songs.
  • 5 years

    5 years
    I was enrolled in Kindergarten. I was able to communicate in Spanish. By this year, I had basic vocabulary words by topics: colors, numbers, farm animals, family, parts of the body. I was able to understand how a conversation in English works, but I didn't have the fluency nor the knowledge. This year I participated in a Picture Bee and won the 1st prize.

    7 years
    I started to learn how to write and read in English. I could read simple sentences and stories that had a lot of repetition. My ability of speaking was increasing. I could answer simple questions and give personal information.

    11 years
    I could start a simple conversation. Also I was able to read short stories more fluently. I could write, still with some difficulties in grammar and syntax. The vocabulary that I had developed was mainly academic. In the social context I didn't understand coloquial language. This year I won my first English cup.

    14 years
    Junior High School Graduation was unforgettable, along with the immense language acquisition. I could read and analyze novels, songs and short stories. I was able to use writing to communicate and to present short compositions. Also, I remember that I made literal transitions of songs from Spanish to English. I could understand and mantain a conversation, but sometimes I used codeswitching. This year I won the English Cup because of my grades and language management.

    17 years
    High School graduation and the birth of a bilingual. This year I was able of listening, speaking, reading and writing in both languages. I could switch easily from one language to another. My social language skills were more polished because I started traveling and meeting people from different places. I used writing a lot since I had pen pals from India, Croatia and the United States.
  • 25 years

    25 years
    Graduating from the University of Puerto Rico where my knowledge of the language grew. I could handle term papers, essays, compositions and critiques with a good management of vocabulary and syntax. Both of the academic and social vocabulary where expanding. I finally could hold social and academic conversation without codeswitching.
  • 30 years

    30 years
    Currently teaching and expanding my language skills. Guess like language is like a safe deposit box; more than one is needed.
