    Captain cook and his ship Endeavour first discovered canteburys peninsula ad he thought it was an island and named it the banks island.
  • The first European settlements

    Captain Wiliiam Rhodes first arrived in Aotearo in 1836. He than came again in 1839 brining a herd of 50 cattle with him near Akaroa.

    In May 1840 Major Thoms Bunbury arrived o his HMS herald to collect al. The Ngai Thau chiefs signature for the Triti of waitangi. During his journey he only collected to Ngai Tahu chiefs signature .
  • The cantebury settlement.

    In the early 1848 the cantebury association was formed and it was three when they named the capital city Christchurch.
    It was named after Oxford university the college John Godley went to. But along with this the settlers were given money for roads and schools. They had to but the land of the Maori to start.
  • The first house in cantebury.

    The first house on cantebury plains was built by the dean brothers in 1843. This house was built out of wood and wooden nails as there were no nails available at the time. It was taken down in the late 1890's as it was considered a but unsafe.
  • First born child in Aotearoa

    On the 7th of Januarary 1844 Jeanne Manson was the first European kid to be born in NZ. Jeanne was born in Riccarton. A year later her family moved to establish a farm.

    In 1847 John Robert godley and Edward gibbon Wakefield met to plan tha cantebury settlement

    Captain Joseph Thomas a surveyor was sent to Cantebury to select a place for the new cantebury settlement and to prepare for the new settlers. On the 12th of April 1850 John Robert Godley arrived on the lady nugent with his family captain Thomas had buil a jetty, customs house and barracks accomodation for the new settlers
  • 1st lyttleton school

    On the 6th of Januarary 1851 the first lyttleton school was built and open by th reverend Henry Jacobs.

    Captain Thomas's had planned three towns Christchurch Sumner and lyttleton which was named after the Lord lyttelton the chairman of the Cantebury association. They started to make a road to sumner but the money was running low so the had to stop the road.
