    Espionage- Igor Gouzenko
    Igor Gouzenko lived in the Russian Empire of Ottawa where he was a cipher clerk. He was sent a telegram ordering him to return to Russia but did not want to go back to the terrible living conditions. He then gathered severl documents that contained information about the Soviet Union spying on Canada and the U.S. Igor decided to defect to help out Canada.

    The Berlin Airlift is the effort made by Britain and several other nations to transport food and supplies to the needing, West Berlin after being cut off by the Russians.
  • The Korean War

    The conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25 to July 27. The invasion on South Korea by North Korea marked the first open act of aggression since the establishment of the United Nations. The Canadian Navy was the first branch of Canadian forces to provide aid to the UN Forces in Korea.

  • The Suez Crisis

    The Suez Crisis
    The Suez Crisis was a diplomatic and military confrontation between Egypt and Britain, France and Israel on the other, with the United States, the Soviet Union and the United Nations playing major roles in forcing Britain, France and Israel to withdraw. The President of Egypt decided to nationalize the Suez Canal after the withdrawal of an offer by Britain and the United States to fund the building of the Aswan Dam.

    Continental Defence- Avro Arrow
    The Avro Arrow was a supersonic jet interceptor developed by A.V. Roe of Canada. It was faster and more advanced than any other comparable aircraft, the Arrow was designed to carry air-to-air nuclear-tipped missiles to destroy Soviet bomb attacks over the Canadian North.

    Nuclear Question- Bomarc Missile Crisis
    In the fall of 1958 Prime Minister Diefenbaker announced an agreement with the US to deploy the American ramjet-powered "Bomarc" antiaircraft missile. In 1963, the Diefenbaker government was forced to call an election because of a cabinet revolt over the issue.

    Peacekeeping- The Congo Crisis
    It was a period of turmoil in the First Republic of the Congo that began with national independence from Belgium and ended with the seizing of power by Joseph Mobutu. Canada and other Peaekeeping countries were sent to rid the Congo of the Belgian troops.
  • The Berlin Wall

    The Berlin Wall
    Was a barrier constructed by the German Democratic Republic. It completely cut off West Berlin from surrounding East Germany and from East Berlin. The Berlin Wall was officially referred to as the "Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart". the East German government announced on 9 November 1989 that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. The wall then started to be torn down.
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis

    The Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Cuban Missile Crisis was a confrontation between the Soviet Union and Cuba on one side and the U.S on the other. Canada and the other NATO members supported and agreed to aid the United States if an attack occurred. Kennedy secretly agreed to remove all missiles set in Italy and in Turkey, and on the border of the Soviet Union in exchange for Khrushchev removing all missiles in Cuba.
  • The Summit Series

    This was the first competition between the Soviet and Canadian national ice hockey teams. This was an eight-game series; Canada won the series four games to three, with one tie.
  • Afghanistan Civil War

    Afghanistan Civil War
    Russian paratroopers landed in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. The United Nations had condemned the invasion as early as January 1980 but Russian troops did not retreat.
  • US "Star Wars"

    US "Star Wars"
    A proposed U.S. strategic defensive system against potential nuclear attacks. "Star Wars" was intended to defend the United States from attack from Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles by intercepting the missiles at various phases of their flight. This program did not last.

    This was a series of political and economic reforms of the Soviet Union by Mikhail Gorbachev> They blamed the United States for unique post-cold war opportunities to bring "new thinking" to the problems of globalization, arms reduction and nuclear disarment
