Bobby McMullen's Amazing Life

  • Age 12 diabetes

    He got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
    " I was 12 so I was fascinated with the idea injections and then the doctor told me I needed to exercise a lot. so my thought was 'oh, I have to play more?' That idea was very inviting".
  • Lost eyesight

    Lost eyesight
    Bobby lost his eyesight unexpectedly lost his eyesight at 29 years old. In his first year of law school he was having a difficult time reading the board. Bobby thought it was just from all the reading he had to do but it was much more serious. When he went to the opthamologist they diagnosed him with prolofirative diabetic retinopathy.'' They told me I would be totally blind in a month and I was''. Now sadly Bobby has no vision in his left eye and 20/1200 best-corrected vision in his right eye.
  • 1994 he learned how to skii with a guide

    His guide would give him verbal commands.
    Bobby was good enough to make the U.S. disabled skii team.
  • Kidney failure

    Two years after he made the U.S. disabled skii team he started to encounter symptoms of kidney failure.He tried to avoid the symptoms until he became very ill in the World Championship Games in 1996.He was diagnosed with Kidney failure and dialysis was the treatment he needed." I realized it wasnt like a broken leg where you set it for six weeks later, the cast comes off.He kept going with a positive attitude after he added his name to the transplant list.He also kept active to stay in shape.

    He got a double transplant. They were his kidney and pancreas.
    This was only his first transplant.

    They were in Nagano, Japan.
    After he left law school.

  • Acute Renal rejection

    He continued Racing with the U.S. team until he started experiencing symptoms of the Acute Renal Rejection.
    Then he was back on dyalysis.
  • His second transplant

    He was on dialysis for two years before he got the news that he was going to recive another transplant.
    The transplant was succesfull.
  • Nissan Xterra world championship mountain bike triatholon

    It was covered in CBS sports spectacular.
    It was in 2006.

    It was a 3,000 mile race.
    He was racing to raise money for transplant research.
  • Downieville classic

    It is a 17 mile course.
    It is said to be the contries most challenging downhill race.
    " I crash alot but I'm ok with that because every time I go out and race, I set a goal and compete against myself. If I give 115%, then whatever outcome I have, I've won the day".
