After months of heading towards Stalingrad, the 6th army of the Wehrmacht began their assault on August 23, 1942. -
The Russians were able to slow down the German's attacks but suffered 200,000 casualties while doing so. Supplies were evacuated out of Stalingrad but not the 400,000 people. Germany cut off supply lines in the Volga river and sent air raids over Stalingrad. By fall, the whole city was in complete ruins.
