In 1971 Augusto boal was arrested and tortured for his work which was considered subversive by the military junta and was exiled for 15 years to Argentina. he stayed for 5 years then self exiled to Europe.

The first is image theater(form of tableaux) and the other is Forum theater which only a short scene is preformed. Both involve oppression and are changed by spectators. The last one is invisible theater, where actors preform a rehearsed situation in public to provoke reactions from bystanders. Theatre of the oppressed also helps with breaking that invisible wall that separates actors and audience members. By doing this he ignored the six elements of a play that Aristotle came up with.

Boal Organized an international theatre of the oppressed festival in Paris and set up a center for the practice of his theory. And in 1986 when he returned to Brazil he also established a center for Theater of the Oppressed in Rio de Janeiro and several other community theatre companies.

In the fall August Boal ran for city council and won a seat. With this he was able to obtain funding for the first international festival in Brazil in July 1993. He served until 1996.
