Atomic Theory Timeline

  • 400 BCE

    Democritus

    Democritus
He used reasoning instead of science when came up with a theory. he was the first person to suggest materials were made up as smaller things. He thought materials had its own type of atoms. He said that matter cannot be destroyed. he found that the smell of bread was so strong you could taste it. He thought that bread particles had to be flying in the air.
  • 300 BCE

    Aristotle

    Aristotle
He was a philosopher. He believed you could understand and figure out anything by thinking it out. He thought everything was made with elements. He had a theory that mass of incomprehensible size everywhere.. this was called hyle.
  • 1494

    George Bauer

    George Bauer
He is considered the founder of geology. He made a way for a study of systematic for the earth, minerals and fossils. he made fundamental contributions to mining geology, mineralogy, structural geology and paleontology.
  • Robert Boyle

    Robert Boyle
He studied gases, he discussed the possibility of atoms existing. He made gas chambers to study from. He did physical experiments. He thought that elements are composed of corpuscles or various types and sizes .
  • Antoine Lavoisiver

    Antoine Lavoisiver
He was known for his experimentation skills. He used an experiment that had Hg0 turning into Hg+ 0. It helped him come up with the law of conservation. He also said that matter is rearranged and never disappears.
  • Amadeo Avogadro

    Amadeo Avogadro
He is known for his hypothesis that equal volume of different gases that contain an equal number of molecules, provided by the same temperature and pressure.
  • Joseph Gay- Lussac

    Joseph Gay- Lussac
He proposed two fundamental laws of gases in the early 19th century. He filled balloons with hydrogen and that was a key to hus investigations.
  • Joseph Proust

    Joseph Proust
He stated that the law definite proportions. The law stated that a ratio of elements in a compound is always the same ad constant. He thought that matter could be put together in certain patterns to be bigger.
  • John Dalton

    John Dalton
He did tons of research. He looked studied almost every scientist or philosopher who had a concept on atoms. he had a theory called Dalton's theory. It had five steps. 1). matter is composed of extremely small particles called atoms. 2).atoms are indivisible and indestructible.3).Atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass, and chemical properties.4).atoms of specific elements are different then then those other elements.5). in a chemical reaction, atoms separate combined and rearrange.
  • Henri Becquerel

    Henri Becquerel
His earliest work was with plane polarization of light with a phenomenon of phosphorescence and with absorption of light by crystals. He also worked on the subject of terrestrial magnetism.
  • Max Planck

    Max Planck
His earliest work was on the subject of the thermodynamics. He also studied the radiation processes and showed that there was electromagnetic in nature. From both studies he was brought to the conclusion the distribution of energy in the spectrum of full radiation. He now as something as we called planck's constant. ts the energy for a resonator of frequency V is hv.
  • Robert Millikan

    Robert Millikan
He made numerous discoveries including: chiefly in field of electricity, optics and molecular physics. He proved that quantity was a constant for all electrons. Demonstrating the structure of electricity.
  • J.J Thomson

    J.J Thomson
He created the cathode ray. Its a type of tube that when a high voltage. Current is spent through it and the atom hit the outside of the tube an it glowed. He determined the charge to mass ratio and came up with the idea that an atom was like plum pudding.
  • Ernest Rutherford

    Ernest Rutherford
He did many experiments. After a while he came to a conclusion that the following where true: 1). an alpha particle (a=He^+2) is positive. 2). A beta particle (b=e) is negative. 3). neutral particle (y) is light.
  • Niels Borh

    Niels Borh
He studied the structure of an atom. He suggest that electrons don't spiral into the nucleus but orbit on different levels. That is called bohr model. He won a noble peace prize.
  • Louis de Broglie

    Louis de Broglie
He studied the nature of electrons and found that all matter was properties,
  • Werner Heisenberg

    Werner Heisenberg
He was a key pioneer of quantum mechanics.
  • Erwin Schrodinger

    Erwin Schrodinger
He developed a number of fundamental.
