Anti-Coolie Act

1862

The Anti-Coolie Act was intended to limit competition between white workers and Asian American workers by imposing a tax on Asian Americans who attempted to work in manufacturing factories as well as to employers who hired Asian Americans.

Seattle Riot

1866

After a group of white workers rounded up nearly every Chinese person in Seattle, they violently expelled them, forcing to board boats that would take them to of town.

Naturalization Act

1870

This act allowed or the naturalization of African Americans, while also ending other minorities, and non-white persons. Including Asian Americans.

Page Act

1875

California Republican Representative in an attempt to “end cheep Chinese labor and immoral Chinese women., created this act and enforced specifically to prevent Chinese women from entering the US. The majority of which were ape ting to join the working the population of working Chinese men.

The California Constitution

1879

This document deterred Chinese immigration into California by prohibiting corporations from employing them.

Attack on Squak Valley Chinese Laborers

1885

Attack on Squak Valley Chinese Laborers was when a group of white men fired their guns into several tents where a group of Chinese hop-pickers was sleeping.

Hells Canyon Massacre

1887

This was when a gang of white men ambshed and murdered thirty-four Chinese gold miners.

Treaty of Paris

1889

This treaty concluded the Spanish- American War, and foresaw the expansion of US imperial power in the Pacific.

Geary Act

1892

The Geary Act of 1892 extended the Chinese Exclusion Act, it required all Chinese residents of the US to carry a resident permit. Breaking this law was punishable by deportation or 1 year of hard labor.

Asiatic Exclusion League

1905

The Japanese and Korean Exclusion League rallied to prohibit immigration of Asian laborers in the US. This league promoted policies banning immigration and employment of Asian immigrants.
