    Jefferson opened the door to expand the west.
  • Slave Trade Outlawed by Act

    Ill-enforced act brought about the end to legally traded slaves in the United States
  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
    Congress passed the Homestead Act intended to encourage settlement of the west providing free land to settlers and huge tracks of land to railroad companies (support Transcontinental RR). Agricultural colleges also started at this time.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    Lincoln redefined war goal as ending slavery. Blacks could then be trained as Union soldiers. Afterwards, 25% of soldiers were African American.

    Constitutional amendment to end slavery. Freedmen's Bureau created to assist under-priviledged. Part of Reconstruciton.

    This act abolished the formulas used with the Immigration Act of 1924. This Act focused on allowing persons with certain skills and family already inside the Us preferential treatment.
