James Alipius Goold
Born November 4th, 1812 and died on June 11th, 1886 he arrived in Sydney, Australia in early 1838. He became Archbishop of Melbourne on March 31st, 1874. He was the First Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne. Laid the foundation of stone for St. Patricks Cathedral, also contributing to the construction. -
Thomas Joseph Carr
Born in Ireland on May 10th, 1839 and died May 6th, 1917. Arrived in Australia June 1887 after becoming Archbishop of Melbourne on November 16th, 1886. He was the Second Roman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne. He promoted the Catholic education system and oversaw the construction of new churches, schools and convents, co-founded Newman college, University of Melbourne with Daniel Mannix, supported construction of St. Patricks Cathedral. -
Daniel Mannix
Born on March 4th, 1864 and died November 6th, 1963, he arrived to Australia in 1912. He became Archbishop in 1917 after the death of Thomas Carr. Archbishop of Melbourne. Involvement in campaigns. He spoke strongly of major issues making him a controversial public figure. He also took part in the problems within the Australian Labour party. -
Justin Simmonds
Born on May 22nd, 1890 and died November 3rd, 1967, he was the first Australian born Archbishop born in Stonehenge, near Glen Innes, New South Wales. He was educated at Louvain University. He was the 4th Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne. Contribution to many Catholic education at a time when the number of Catholic secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Melbourne was growing. -
James Knox
Born March 2nd, 1914 and died on June 26th, 1983 he was an Australian born Archbishop born in Bayswater, Perth. He was the 5th Archbishop of Melbourne. He had a vision for theological education in Melbourne. He proposed one central theological college rather than separate seminaries for diocesan priests and those of religious institutes. -
Peter Andrew Comensoli
Born in Illawarra March 25th, 1964. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Sydney in April 20th, 2011. In the archdiocese of Sydney, he served as Episcopal Vicar. November 20th, 2014, he was appointed the third bishop of diocese of Broken Bay, the following year he was appointed a Board director of Catholic Schools, New South Wales. June 29th, 2018, he became the ninth archbishop of Melbourne being the current. On August 1st, 2018, he was installed at St. Patricks Cathedral.
