    Jamestown, Virginia
    The settlers of the New World chose Jamestown to be the first colony. Their hope was to find gold. Half of the colonists dies due to starvation.
  • Virginia Company Headright System

    Virginia Company Headright System
    This was a system where settlers paid to bring people over into America, and the new citizens would be granted 50 acres of land. The Headright System aimed to increase population.
  • First Thanksgiving

    First Thanksgiving
    The first actual Thanksgiving was celebrated by the pilgrims and the Native Americans in 1621. A Native American chief, Squanto, gave food to the pilgrims. Although in the present, we celebrate the holiday in late November, the first Thanksgiving took place in mid-October. (Day on timeline is not exact.)
  • Tobacco Is a Leading Export

    Tobacco Is a Leading Export
    Tobacco was introduced from the Natives to the English in 1619. By 1624, more than 200,000 pounds of tobacco was produced per yer.
  • Annapolis Convention

    Annapolis Convention
    Twelve delegates met in Annapolis, Maryland to discuss how they could better regulate trade. Not a lot of progress was made, so they planned to meet at another time.
  • Philidelphia Convention

    Philidelphia Convention
    The delegates met again from the end of May 1787 to the middle of May 1787 to revise the Articles of Confederation. Instead, they ended up writing up a draft of the U.S. Constitution.
  • Northwest Ordinance

    Northwest Ordinance
    The creation of the Northwest Ordinance was a process to create five new states. These included Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. In these states, people treated the Natives better and they also outlawed slavery.
  • First Presidential Election

    First Presidential Election
    The first presidential election began in December of 1788. There were nine federalist canidates, two anti-federalist canidates, and one independent canidate. The independent canidate won unanimously. The winner, George Washington, became the United States' first president.

    Seneca Falls Convention
    Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were two abolitionists who created the first women's rights convention in the U.S. The Seneca Falls Convention had about 200 members in attendence. The women held this at the Wesleyan Chapel in Seneca Falls, New York.

    Woman's Christian Temperate Union
    The WCTU was created in Hillsboro, Ohio. This was a female organization whose goal was to create a "pure and sober" world. They also had a lot to do with women's suffrage.
  • Hull House

    Hull House
    Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr founded this institution in Chicago, Illinois. The Hull House consisted of settlement houses for European immagrants. Addams described the houses purposes once as the three R's: residence, research, and reform.
  • Women Get the Right to Vote

    Women Get the Right to Vote
    Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in 1919. This amendment gave women the right to vote. Giving women the right to vote was an issue that went on for a long time, but in 1919, the issue was resolved.
  • George H.W. Bush Becomes President

    George H.W. Bush Becomes President
    George H.W. Bush had a lot of careers including: war hero, pilot, congressman, ambassador to the U.N. director of the C.I.A., and Vice President. However, in 1989, he was inaugurated as the president of the United States.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    Congress enacted this law to prohibit discrimination of anyone with a disability. This law gives protections that are similar to those promised in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Not only are protections given, but businesses must give appropriate accomodations to the disabled.
  • Rodney King Incident

    Rodney King Incident
    In 1991, Rodeny King and two others were involved in a high-speed car chase. The chase was then followed by some of the LAPD officers beating on King. Though this was filmed by a witness, an all white jury found three out of four of the police officers not guilty. This caused Los Angeles to erupt in riots due to racial tension. In the end, 53 people died and over 2,000 were injured,
  • Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty

    Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty
    This was a treaty between the United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The purpose was to limit the number of war heads each country could have. The two countries finally signed this treaty after ten years of negotiating.
