  • Mexican-American War

    This was a war between Mexio and the United States. This war was initiated by the United States and resulted in Mexico's defeat and the loss of approximately half of its national territory in the North.
  • Treaty of Guadeloupe-Hidalgo

    this treaty was constructed following the Mexican-American war which ended with Mexico;'s defeat. this was a treaty of peace, friendhip, limits, and settlement between the United States and the Mexican republic.
  • California Gold Rush

    This is when California becomes a state because they have a population exceding 60,000.
  • Compromise of 1850

    This was a oompromise that makes California a free state.
  • Election of 1860

    This election causes South Carolina to suceed from the United Sates which becuse they thought Lincoln (who won) was going to make slavery illegal. This serves as the immedeate outbreak of the Civil War.
  • Fort Sumter

    This is the start of the Civil War. This is a war fought between the north and south of the United Sates. This was a war fought to unify the United States.
  • Emanciption Proclamation

    A proclamation that Lincoln put into place which sifted the meaning of the war. The war was no longer just about unifying the states, it was now about slavery.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    At this point in the war the south was winning, then the Battle of Gettysburg was the first northern victory. After this victory the war started to be in their favor.
  • 13th Amendment

    This amendment abolished slavery.
  • Wade Davis Bill

    Congress thought that president Lincolns plans were to easy on the south. Wade Davis's bill was a congresstional plan and was much more strict on the south which Congress favored.
  • The Freeedmen's Bureau

    This was initiated by president Lincoln, it was intended to last one eyar aftter the Civil War. It was an important agency of early recnstruction, assisting freedmen in the south.
  • 14th Amendment

    This amendment granted citzenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States, which included former slaves recently freed.
  • 15th Amendment

    Granted African American men the right to vote.
  • Inauguration of R.B. Hayes

    As president, Hayes oversaw the end of reconstruction. He began the efforts that lead to civil service reform, and attempted to reconsile the devision caused by the Civil War and reconstruction.
