American Revolution Timeline

  • French and Indian War(7 Year War)

    The British won this war, which was part of the European Seven Year War. The war left Britain in great debt. Britain started looking at America for money.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    The British government banned colonists from settling west of the Appalachian mountains.
  • Sugar Act

    Parliament taxes sugar imported into the colonies
  • Stamp Act

    The first direct tax on the American colonies, it taxes legal papers, magazines, newspapers, and other documents.
  • Quartering Act

    Parliament makes the colonists pay for British soldiers(Red Coats) to live with them
  • Townshend Act

    Parliament forces taxes on many items or goods imported to the colonies.
  • Boston Massacre

    A very large crowd surrounds a group of British soldiers. The soldiers fire and kill 5 colonists.
  • Tea Act

    Britain makes the British East India Company the only company to import tea into the colonies.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Angered by the Tea Act, a group of colonist dress up as Indians, board British ships, and throw their tea into the harbor.
  • Coercive Acts (Intolerable Acts)

    Angered about the Tea Party, Parliament passes a series of laws called the Coercive Acts.
  • First Continental Congress

    Every colony except Georgia meet in Philadelphia sending delegates. This includes George Washington, Sam Adams, Patrick Henry, and John Hancock.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Delegates from the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia once again. Soon after the meeting, warfare started declaring the beginning of the Revolutionary War

    American and British troops open fire and Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts.

    Thomas Paine published this short, but highly popular book arguing independence from Great Britain.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Statement adopted by the Second Continental Congress stating that the thirteen colonies regarded themselves as thirteen states. The authors were Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman.
  • Boston Massacre and Boston Marathon Bombings

    These are the same because in the Boston Massacre British soldiers killed 5 innocent people. In the Boston Marathon bombings it was a act of terrorism. They both are the same in some way.
  • French And Indian War and the War in Iraq

    The French and Indian War lasted for 7 whole years. The war in Iraq lasted for 10 years. These two wars are the same because they both ended with a truce.
  • Declaration of Independence and Mexico's Independence

    The Declaration of Independence was signed to tell Great Britain that the thirteen colonies were going to be thirteen free states and were not going to be ruled by Great Britain. Mexico gained its Independence by signing the Treaty of Cordoba.
