American History Timeline 1877 to 1920

  • The American Federation of Labor

    It was the first federation of labor unions in the United States. The federation strived for higher wages, better working conditions, and a shorter work week.
  • Depression of 1893

    Up to this time this had been the worst depression. It affected the employment of the US citizens, railroads, and hundreds of banks.
  • Immigration Restriction League

    Congress passed a bill that stated imigrants had to take a test on their English. They had to know at least 40 words in English. However, President Cleveland eventually vetoed it.
  • San Fransico Earthquake

    The San Fransico earthquake was one of the most memorable earthquakes of all time. It lasted almost 80 kilometers.
  • The Beginning of WW1

    America entered the war after German U-Boats sunk the Lusitania in 1915. Also, the German side trying to convince Mexico to invade the US. The war ended in 1918.
  • 18th Amendment

    The 18th amendment prohibited the manufacture, sale, transport, import, or export of alcoholic beverages. It was later repealed by the 21st Amendment on December 5, 1933.
  • 19th Amendment

    The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote. It took 40 years for the senate to agree on this amendment.
