The fall of Fort Sumter

The fall of Fort Sumter was the first engagement of the war. Nobody died in the two-day bombardment. But two men died in a flag ceremony after the fact. it is important because it was the first military action of the war.

Antietam

The Battle of Antietam was the single deadliest day of the war. In 12 hours 23,000 soldiers were killed. The union victory gave Lincoln the win he needed to realise the emancipation proclamation.

Surrender at Appomattox Court House

Apr 9, 1865

The surrender at the Appomattox courthouse marked the end of the civil war. Robert E Lee surrendered the army of northern Virginia to Ulysses S Grant. It was important because it ended the bloodiest war in American history.

The 13th Amendment Ratified.

Dec 6, 1865

The 13th Amendment ended slavery in America. It outlawed all forms of slavery except for punishment. This was a big deal because it ended slavery.

14th Amendment Ratified

Jul 9, 1868

The 14th amendment was very important. It granted citizenship to all people born and naturalized into the United States. It also provided equal protection under the law.

15th Amendment Ratified

Feb 3, 1870

The 15th amendment was very important. The amendment made it so the right to vote could not be infringed on. It was important because it guaranteed the right to vote.
