Burnside and his troops remained north of the river at the battle to protect the lengthy supply chains going to the main fighters for the Union Army. The battle was considered a draw. I believe Burnside was effective at the battle because he was the one that made sure the supplies needed to keep the Union Army fighting, got to them.
