    Picture from this website (click to go to page) The Black Codes were a set of laws that were passed by legislatures in the southern states in 1866. The Black Code's purpose was to help control the the freed African Americans. For example, one of the balck codes made it illegal for African Americans to own or rent farms.
  • Civil Rights Act

    Civil Rights Act
    The civil rights act of 1866 allowed the government to protect the African American's rights.This had a lot to do with race because the African Americans wouldn't be vulnerable to violence form mad southners. Unfortunately, President Johnson didn't sign either bills.

Tennesse was the only state to join the union.It divided the 10 states in 5 military districts. Each one of the dustricts had a general until a new governemt was formed.African american men could now vote which is going to make a difference.

Eventually the republicans took control of southern state governments.In 1868 Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, N.C, and S.C joined the union.

    Picture from this website (click to go to page) The 14th ammendment said that if a state were to stop a person form voting they could lose some representation on congress. It also stated that everybody was qualified to "equal protection of laws." Southern states has to radify it.

    Click here to go to page where I found the pictureThis ammendment stated that anybody was allowed to vote and they couldn't base it off "race, color, or any past condition of servitude." The republicans thought that there job was over and that from now on the African American's could live in peace... but, there beliefs are too optimistic.
