World War I caused bad things to happen to Albert. He was interned as an enemy alien and he and Helene were forced to stay in a monastery in the Pyrenees Mountains, where Helene becomes sick and spends the rest of her life in weakness.

World War 1 ends and Albert and his wife were free to go back to Lambarene

His only child, Rena, is born.

He returned to his former clinic (his wife and new born daughter stayed behind due to health reasons) and found it in ruins. He builds a new hospital on different land.

Helene dies in Switzerland at age 78 and is later buried in Lambarene.

He had spent the last six years of his life in the town where his wife had been burried in 1957. Albert was a great man who believed in many causes and always gave his all to do the right thing.
