    Alan Chalmers was born in Bristol, England in 1939. He received his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Bristol in 1961, and his M. Sc. in Physics from the University of Manchester in 1964 (Wikipedia,2019).

    Early Career and PhD work

    Chalmers taught mathematics and physics for 2 years before resuming his colligate endeavors. He entered into the History and Philosophy of Science program at the University of London, and wrote his dissertation on James Clerk Maxwell's electromagnetic theory (Center for Philosophy of Science, 2021).

    Postdoctoral Career

    Dr. Chalmers became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Sydney in 1971. In 1986 he moved to the science facility as Director for the Unit of History and the Philosophy of Science. Dr. Chalmers held that position until his retirement in 1999 (Coserve, 2017).

  • What is This Thing Called Science?

    What is This Thing Called Science?
    In 1976 Alan wrote his best-selling book, What is This Thing Called Science? Using a minimal amount of technical terminology, he discusses the shortcomings of empiricist philosophies and assesses modern attempts to replace them. He revised the book every ten years while he taught, and is now on its 4th edition (Wikipedia, 2021).
